Series Of Books Available For Child Care Providers

Published Wednesday, December 22, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune

A series of books developed in the University of Arkansas' School of Human Environmental Sciences offers child care providers information and creative activities for promoting success in important areas of child development.

The five-book Beginnings' series is based on specific curriculums generated in the last five years by the Arkansas Department of Human Services, said LaVerne Nelson, research associate with the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station.

Sue Martin, professor of human development and family studies, has worked with DHS since 1988 to produce four to six booklets a year for Arkansas child care providers. Nelson has been editor of the books since 1992. The Beginnings' series is a compilation of those booklets.

The books are Success in Language Arts and Dramatic Play, Success in Math and Science, Success in Music and Movement, Success in Art, and Success in Food and Nutrition.

"The Beginnings' series is an excellent resource for teachers of young children," said Kathy Stegall, program support administrator for the Child Development Unit of the DHS Division of Child Care and Early Childhood Education.

"The books are full of activities and strategies to extend learning," Stegall said. "Every early childhood classroom needs this resource for planning developmentally appropriate activities."

They are available from the Agricultural Experiment Station. The complete five-volume set is $32.67 to cover cost of printing. Individual volumes range in price from $5.17 to $8.52.
