De Queen Leopards Pound Blue JaysBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 22, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune De Queen's Leopards proved to be more than Nevada could handle as the Jays went down 78-57 recently. J.J. Lewis and Keon Page led the Jays to a 12-8 lead in the first quarter, only to see the Leopards rally in the second period. While Nevada scored 10 in the second, the Leopards were tossing the rock in the hoop for 19, and were up 29-22 at the break. The Jays took a page from the Leopards in the third by scoring 19, as Jason Yarbrough and Jamarrio Beasely paved the way. However, De Queen was more than ready and added 25 to its total. By the end of three Nevada was on the short end of a 52-48 score. De Queen, though, was just getting warmed up as the Leopards pounced on the wounded Jays in the final eight minutes for 29 points, while Nevada managed 16. Yarbrough led the Jays with 16, with Beasely the only other member of the team in double figures with 10. N. Reynolds was hot for the Leopards as he ripped the cords for 27. N. Martin was close behind with 19, including six three pointers. The Jays shot well at the line, connecting on eight of nine, while the Leopards had more opportunities at the stripe and hit 20 of 28.
