Saratoga Handles Emmet For 3 GamesBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 22, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune Emmet's Eagles dropped a trio of games against Saratoga recently, though the Bulldogs didn't win in a walk. The Eagles did all possible to make life miserable for Saratoga, but didn't have the oomph to chalk up a win. LADY EAGLES 38 LADY BULLDOGS 43 The Lady Eagles battled hard against Saratoga but fell 43-38. The trio of Amber Dougan, Rose Martin and Amanda Hodges combined for 11 points in the opening quarter while the defense only allowed six. In period two, though, the Lady Dogs rallied to take a 21-17 lead into the locker room at the break. Chandra Carey led the way for the comeback with eight points, while Hodges paced Emmet with four in the second. Emmet continued fighting in the third quarter, but with Hodges, who scored eight, as the primary offense, the Lady Eagles wound up slipping to a 33-27 deficit. The squads played almost dead even in the final eight minutes. Hodges led Emmet with 20 on the night as the only member of the team in double-figures. Carey was unstoppable for Saratoga as she had a game-high 30. Lillian Marshall stroked the nylons for 10. At the line, Emmet was six of 11, while the Lady Dogs converted seven of 13. EAGLES 62 BULLDOGS 68 A slow first period made it an uphill climb for the Eagles as they succumbed to the Dogs 68-62. The Eagles only managed five points in the opening eight minutes, while Saratoga ripped the cords for 17. Emmet rallied in the second quarter, scoring 17, behind a balanced attack, while the Dogs were held to 13. At the half, the score was 30-22 in Saratoga's favor. In the second half, the Eagles offense kicked into gear but Emmet was outscored by the Dogs 20-19 to make it 50-41. Emmet managed to win the final eight minutes, but it wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit. Dee Muldrow paced the Eagles with 20 points. Carl Hurt followed with a 13-point outing. R. Lewis led all scorers with 29 for Saratoga, while Mikato Fulks tossed in 14 and I. Bazelle added 10. The Eagles shot lights out from the charity stripe, playing string music to the tune of 21 of 29. The Dogs were an even 50 percent at nine of 18. JUNIOR EAGLES 23 JUNIOR DOGS 41 A cold third quarter spelled doom for Emmet's junior boys as they went down 41-23 to the Pups. The Eagles opened playing close but trailing 15-10 at the end of one, and found the Pups pulling away by halftime as the difference grew to nine at 26-17. When halftime ended, Emmet's offense remained in the locker room as the Eagles were unable to score. On the other side, the Pups added 11 to their tally to stretch the lead to 37-17. Emmet won the final six minutes 6-4, but it was a moot point. Mario Hopson and Bryant McClellan led Emmet with six points each. Saratoga was paced by 11 from S. Green. Emmet was two of six at the line, while Saratoga netted eight of 16 free throws. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
