Wolverettes Bite Lady Cobras, Defeat Fouke By 34 PointsPublished Wednesday, December 22, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe fifth-ranked Prescott Wolverettes added two more wins to their list last week, moving their record to 11-0 overall for the new season. But, more importantly, the two wins were against conference foes, giving the Wolverettes a 2-0 record in the 7AAA Conference. For two weeks in a row the Arkansas Democrat had the Wolverettes ranked number five in the state in Class AAA Sunday. The Democrat poll was for games through Tuesday, December 14. Ahead of the Wolverettes are Ozark (8-2); Valley View (16-0); Pocahontas (10-0); and Dover (9-0). Prescott was 10-0 at the time, but the win Friday night against Fouke probably would not improve the senior girls' standings in the poll unless one of the above teams lost Friday night. Other teams in the top 10 in Class AAA were Prairie Grove, Piggott, Pulaski Academy, England and Cave City. The Wolverettes will not play this week due to the holiday vacation, but they will play next Monday at 2:40 p.m. at Nashville in the Nashville Holiday Classic. This classic rotates between Prescott and Nashville. Last year it was held in the PHS gymnasium. The three-day classic ends Wednesday, December 29. WOLVERETTES 53 FOUNTAIN LAKE 47 The Fountain Lake Lady Cobras seems to always give the Wolverettes a hard time. Last year the Lady Cobras beat them at Fountain Lake to stop a perfect streak. That was the only blemish for the Wolverettes until they were defeated in the finals of the Class AAA State Tournament. This year seemed about to repeat itself in the PHS gym. The Wolverettes scored the first three points, but then the stepped into the ice zone. They went cold in a hurry and the Lady Cobras led 17-11 after one quarter. At one time in the second period the Wolverettes trailed by 14 points, but they closed the half at 28-16. Nothing would go down for them. Some excellent passes were made inside by Andrea Cossey and Traci Graham, but butter fingers prevailed and the team could not convert them into points. The senior girls spent very little time in the dressing room at halftime as coach Bill Cossey had them out on the court, after a brief conference, warming up for the second half. They were a new team in the half, too. Andrea Cossey, who had only scored three points the first two quarters of play, found her mark and began to hit the three-pointers. She scored 23 points the second half, including six from long range. Cossey made things happen. The team not only caught the Lady Cobras, but led 39-37 going into the final period, finally winning it by six points, 53-47. Cossey was perfect from the free throw stripe, hitting four of four. Jeania Haynie was another determining factor. She connected with six field goals and was five of seven from the stripe for 17 points. Traci Graham, another team leader, just couldn't do what she thought she should, but she did finish with 7 points. Jennifer Ingram scored 3 points for the Wolverettes. Becca Thompson was the leading scorer for the Lady Cobras with 23 points, hitting 10 field goals and making three of eight free throws. Others scoring for Fountain Lake were Roxann Starnes with 9 points; Lyndsey Martin had 7; Amanda Bean scored 6; and Jessica Edwards scored 2 points. The Wolverettes made 11 of 16 free throws during the game while Fountain Lake was 4 of 12. WOLVERETTES 74 FOUKE 40 It was a different tale Friday night at Fouke, as the Wolverettes soundly defeated the Lady Panthers 74-40. Led by Traci Graham with 30 points and Andrea Cossey with 24, the Wolverettes were far enough ahead the last half for Coach Cossey to let many players from off the bench play. Graham and Cossey each had four 3-pointers. Graham also had nine 2-point field goals while Cossey had six. Neither player went to the foul line. Jeania Haynie also scored in double figures, finishing with 10 points. Haynie hit four field goals and she was 2 for 2 from the chairty stripe. Jennifer Ingram, Vontrece Flemons and Taquila Williams each contributed 2 points to the victory. Holly Smith was Fouke's leading scorer with 15 points, six 2-pointers and she was 3 for 3 from the stripe. The Wolverettes led 22-9 after one period of play, 46-20 by halftime and 69-33 after three periods. The win moved their record to 2-0 in the conference and 11-0 overall. The Wolverettes made 9 of 17 free throws while Fouke shot 38, but only made 26. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
