Military NewsPublished Wednesday, December 15, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneWhile most Americans are celebrating the holiday season at home or with family, U.S. Navy Airman Carols Welch, son of Ivory and Kay Curry of Prescott, is scheduled to spend the holidays forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, abroad the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk. Welch is one of more than 63,000 sailors, marines and coast guardsmen who are serving our country separated from their families and loved ones this holiday period. Welch is working abroad to preserve peace as part of our nation's forward defense forces. Carriers, like USS Kitty Hawk, are forward deployed around the world to maintain a U.S. presence and provide rapid response in times of crisis. They serve as a highly visible deterrent to would-be aggressors and, if deterrence fails, offer the most versatile and powerful weapons available, including NATO Sea Sparrow missiles and tactical aircraft. The 1997 graduate of Prescott High School joined the navy in July 1997. Army Sgt. Cassandra D. England has arrived for duty at Camp Humphreys, Pyongtaek- Gun, South Korea. England, an automated logistics specialist, is assigned to the 52nd Aviation Regiment. She is the daughter of Erma G. Morehead of Chidester and Frankie Gulley of Bluff City.
