Prescott's Curley Wolves finished the Lakeside Classic in second place, falling only to the host team.

The Wolves also tangled with a potential foe in the regional tournament at the end of the season, as they faced Hamburg Saturday afternoon, dispatching the Lions 59-56.

In fact, other than the first game, the Wolves were locked in mortal combat, scratching out wins by three points against both Hamburg and Van Cove.

Playing in their first basketball game since football season ended, the Wolves got off to a slow start.

This was all Lakeside needed as the Rams posted a 59-43 win Thursday night.

The Rams jumped on the Wolves 24-5 in the first eight minutes of the game, forcing Prescott to play catchup the rest of the night.

Prescott did better in the second quarter, but trailed at the half with the score 37-16.

Not giving in the Wolves came out fighting in the second half, cutting the lead to 49-30, and outscoring the Rams 23-10 in the final period.

Prescott connected on 10 of 18 free throws, while Lakeside netted 13 of 16.

Brian Woodley paced the Wolves with 19 points.

Wallace led Lakeside with 18.

The Wolves had their hands full with the Hornets in round two, but managed to pull out a 56-53 win.

Prescott opened the game with a 15-12 first quarter, and was in command 36-22 at the half.

But, with the team having little time to work as a unit, the Hornets were able to fight back in the third, cutting the lead to 44-33.

The Wolves had to hold on for dear life in the final eight minutes as Van Cove outscored Prescott 20-12.

Once again Prescott was 10 of 18 at the line, with the Hornets nailing 19 of 32.

Matt Brannon led Prescott with 14 points, while Woodley added 10.

Hughes was the game's high scorer with 25.

HAMBURG 56

This game was nip and tuck all the way, with the Wolves coming out on top 59-56.

Hamburg opened the outing with a 14-12 lead at the end of one, and remained ahead by two at the half as the score was 27-25.

The Lion lead was cut to one by the end of the third period as Prescott outscored Hamburg 12-11 to make it 38-39.

In the final frame, the Wolf offense came alive to outscore Hamburg 20-16.

Both teams shot 50 percent from the line, Prescott hitting four of eight and Hamburg connecting on six of 12.

Woodley led Prescott with 24, while Hamburg's Black also scored 24.

"They did some good things and bad things," said Wolf coach Larry Newsom. "I'm proud of their effort."

Newsom said the Hamburg game was a rough one, but the team kept its head together at the end to earn the win.

On the Lakeside game, he lauded their second half effort, saying the team is learning more with each outing.

While the football team was in the playoffs, he said, the junior varsity players gained a lot of valuable experience and confidence.
