Wolverettes Take Lakeside Classic With 3 WinsBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 15, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott's Wolverettes went to 8-0 on the year with a three-game sweep in the Lakeside Classic in Hot Springs. The three-day tournament pitted the Wolverettes against Lakeside, Van Cove and Hamburg, with Prescott sending all three teams packing. PRESCOTT 47 LAKESIDE 39 The Wolverettes had their hands full with the host team, but managed to pull off a 47-39 win as the Lady Rams fought back late. Lakeside opened the game with a 10-8 first quarter lead, but the Lady Rams were on the short end of a 30-25 halftime score as the Wolverette offense came alive in the second. The third quarter saw Prescott stretch its lead to 13, but the Lady Rams battled in the final eight minutes to cut the gap to eight. Andrea Cossey was the leading scorer with 21 points, followed by a 20-point outing by Traci Graham. Katie Wilson led Lakeside with 11. The Wolverettes converted eight of 10 free throws, while Lakeside was a perfect four for four. PRESCOTT 40 HAMBURG 34 Prescott almost let this one get away after building a 12-point lead in the third quarter, only to see the Lady Lions try and pull off an upset. Still, the Wolverettes were able to post a 40-34 win. It was an 8-7 first period as defense ruled and the Wolverette offense was cold. Halftime wasn't much better as the cold shooting and salty defense continued. The score at the break was an incredible 13-9. After the intermission, though, the Wolverettes came alive, putting 19 points on the board to take a 32-24 lead, then hang on to preserve the win in the final stanza. The Wolverettes were 11 of 16 at the stripe, while the Lady Lions connected on five of seven. Cossey had the hot hand for Prescott with 13 as the only one in double-figures. Jeanie Haynie netted nine, while Graham scored eight. Allen led Hamburg with 14. PRESCOTT 46 VAN COVE 35 This was a slowly played game as the Lady Hornets of Van Cove showed incredible patience on offense, working the ball to the open player before taking a shot. However, the Wolverettes were not to be outdone, and showed they, too, can play at a slower pace as they won 46-35. The two squads played close in the first quarter, which ended with Prescott leading 14- 9. But, the Wolverette defense proved to be almost impenetrable in the second period, as Van Cove only managed to score three points. Meanwhile, Prescott added 11 to its total to go to the lockers leading 25-12. Both teams managed to score 11 points in the third quarter, which meant Prescott led 36- 23, and held on for the victory. The Wolverettes were eight of 10 at the charity stripe, while Cove was three of five. Cossey was the game's leading scorer with 18, followed by Graham's 16. Haynie added 10 in the win. Dickison led the Lady Hornets with 16. At the conclusion of the game, Prescott's Graham was presented a trophy as the top player in the classic. The team was given a plaque denoting them as champs of the event as well. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
