Myth Of Holiday Plants Not True Says Horticulturists

Some people have been taught that poinsettias are poisonous and that mistletoe is harmless. Neither is true, according to Janet Carson, horticulturist for the Cooperative Extension Service, University of Arkansas.

"Poinsettias are not deadly," says Carson, "although they can cause a bad reaction in some people. Coming in contact with the white, milky sap may cause a mild skin rash, and eating the plant could cause an upset stomach.

"Mistletoe is a different story" Carson says. "The berries, which might look like candy to a child, are

poisonous. If you use mistletoe, remove the berries. The plant can dry out very quickly indoors and shed its berries onto the floor."

Plastic mistletoe may not seem as 'Christmasy' as the real thing, but it's a safe alternative if you have youngsters and pets around.

"The best thing to do is to keep all plants, whether you know they're poisonous or not, out of the reach of children and pets," says Carson.

"And while we're talking about safety, don't forget to water your tree. Keep the tree stand full of fresh water and the room as cool as possible. Don't leave the lights on when you're gone, and never put a tree near an open flame."

Have a safe, happy Christmas season.
