Dr. Kenneth Harris Keynote Speaker To Local HIPPY Group

Published Wednesday, December 15, 1999 in the Gurdon Times

Dr. Kenneth Harris, professor of early childhood education at Henderson State University, was the keynote speaker for the December HIPPY group meeting held December 9 at Clark County Youth Development Center.

Dr. Harris spoke to the parents on 'Preparing Preschoolers for Entry Into the Public School System.'

Harris stated that two things are very critical for a child's success in school: learning to read and write. He emphasized from birth to age eight are the important years for a child to learn to read, because their capacity for learning takes shape.

Harris also said that what the children learn in school is contingent upon what they learn at home. Harris stated that children need to be talked to and read to. Children must have experiences.

Pre-schoolers should be taught other important skills, such as social skills, how to get along with others, manners, grooming and health skills.

Parents should promote a positive self concept in children. Children must be taught to be responsible.

Other activities involving the parents included: a getting acquainted activity, home visitors role playing the week's lesson with the parents, and singing Christmas carols.

Refreshments were served and door prizes were awarded.

The next parent meeting will be held in January. Visitors are welcome to attend.
