Holiday SafetyPublished Wednesday, December 15, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesGurdon police officer Frank Plasek gives some suggestions to make this holiday a safer one. First, he said, for those planning to drink during the holiday season, don't drive. Either stay at home or have a designated driver. The fine for driving while intoxicated is $750 plus court costs and probation fees. In addition, Plasek said, a DWI ticket will result in higher insurance rates. He also suggests people be wary of door-to-door or phone solicitors. He said if anyone is suspicious of such a solicitor they need to call the GPD and report them. Don't leave packages in plain view in vehicles, Plasek said, as there are those who would break the windows to steal them. Instead, put all purchases in the trunk, out of sight of potential thieves. For those leaving home for the holiday, make sure and notify someone trusted about the trip, letting them know how long you'll be gone and when you plan to return. Let the post office know about the trip as well and have all mail held until you return. The same should be done with newspapers. In addition, he said, have interior lights on timers. This will make it appear as though someone is home, making potential burglars think before breaking in. Those with pets who plan on leaving for the holidays should make sure their animals have plenty of food and water enough to last until you return home. "People need to use common sense," Plasek said, "and be aware of their surroundings." Don't shop alone, he said, go with a friend instead. Stay in lighted places and away from the dark whenever possible. When getting ready to leave a store after dark, ask if one of the employees will accompany you to your car. When driving, he said, make sure and wear seat belts. In addition, don't be in a hurry. Instead, allow extra time to get from one place to another and use headlights to be more visible. He also suggested to watch more closely for children as they are excited about the holidays and may not pay attention to what they're doing.
