Patterns Picked For New ClassroomsBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, June 16, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune It was sample time for the Emmet School Board, as it had to choose colors for the new building. Dr. Gene Ross, superintendent of Emmet Schools, brought in a sample of floor covering the contractor has a supply of and could install as soon as the rooms are ready. The sample Ross had was an industrial gray. The board agreed to go with this covering for the floors. Next up was choosing wall colors. Jerry Simmons, project architect, brought color samples for the walls and shingles. The board was adamant in saying yellow walls were not a choice before Simmons began. After examining the samples, the panel chose an antique white or eggshell color for the walls, and told Simmons to match the shingles on the existing buildings as best he could. Once the building has been built, the door facings for the rooms will be painted a dark blue, matching the school colors as close as possible. Work on the foundation for the new building is underway, as the dirt work has been done. If all goes according to plan, the new building will be ready for occupancy by Aug. 19, the first day of school. Simmons told the board the doors to the rooms will be metal to help with security. It was also discussed to have wire mesh window installed in the doors instead of a regular glass. Simmons pointed out laminated glass is hard to break, as it is the same type of glass used for vehicle windshields. In discussing security, Ross said the school could run more wiring for video cameras in the classrooms. Ross said the compaction tests have been good on the soil so far and the contractor is ready to bring his equipment in and start work. Financially, he said, the district is in good shape. There should be a balance of $600,000 in the operating fund, with $300,00 of this being put in the building fund. This will leave the district with $300,000 to start the 1999-2000 academic year with. In other business, the board voted to purchase additional insurance from the Dwight Jones Agency of Nashville to protect all students in the district. The school, Ross said, has been buying a policy for students who play basketball, and this will provide an umbrella for all students at a cost of $161. The catastrophic policy has a deductible of $25,000 with a limit of $5 million per student. Ross informed the board the trash bin and incinerator have been removed and the school's tennis courts are being repaired this summer. The July meeting was moved from the first Monday in the month to the second one as the first Monday falls on July 5, and many people will be recognizing this day as part of the Independence Day weekend.
