Go-Devils Defeat Prescott; Wolverettes Handle GirlsBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 8, 1999 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon's Lady Devils may have a mental block where Prescott is concerned. The Wolverettes visited Gurdon Tuesday, Nov. 30, and were less than gracious to their hosts as they posted a 67-51 win. The Lady Devils fought tooth and nail with Prescott in the opening quarter. In fact, Gurdon took the opening tip and scored to get the game underway. The Lady Devils jumped to a 5-2 lead and held on to a 10-7 lead, only to see the Andrea Cossey-Traci Graham connection go to work. The game, though, was typical of Gurdon-Prescott matches as the two teams were physical, brutally so in the paint, determined and battled hard for the win. For the first six minutes of the game the Lady Devils were able to hold on to a slim lead. However, when the Wolverettes began pressing, it forced turnovers and allowed Prescott to take control. The first quarter ended with Prescott up 16-13. Gurdon's offense went cold in the second frame, as the Lady Devils only managed six points in eight minutes. Prescott's running game turned the contest into a track meet. Gurdon's plight wasn't aided with the fact the Wolverettes were in the bonus to start the second period. Halftime arrived with the score 38-19. The Lady Devils fought back in the third quarter, trying to make a game of it. Unfortunately, fouls again reared their ugly head as Gurdon was called for three in the first 90 seconds of the third. This kind of foul trouble took the Lady Devils out of their pressure game and allowed Prescott to run wild. Period three ended with Gurdon on the short end of a 52-35 score. As the final eight minutes began, it was a war in the paint as both squads battled for every loose ball and rebound. Because of being behind, Gurdon was forced to fire three after three to try and cut into Prescott's lead. With 2:55 left Gurdon was called for an intentional foul. This put Prescott at the line and guaranteed the Wolverettes the ball afterwards. This allowed the visitors to post a 65-43 lead and begin to clear the benches. Three members of the Lady Devil team hit the double-figure mark, led by Vanesha Young's 14. Sonya Beasley had 12, with Tiffany Ware scoring 10. DEVILS 56 WOLVES 40 Gurdon gained a measure of revenge against Prescott as the Go-Devils whipped the Wolves 56-40 to make up for an earlier loss. The Devils jumped all over Prescott in the first quarter, taking a 13-4 lead, building this to a 25-10 halftime advantage. Gurdon's overall speed was too much for Prescott in the second half as well, though the Wolves did cut into the lead by the end of the third at 34-24. The Devils had four players in double figures, led by RaShaun Hopson's 15. Glenn stroked the nylons for 12, with Anderson netting 11. Brannon Hatley got into the act with 10. Kevin Fulkes led all scorers with 18 for Prescott. The Devils had a good night at the line as well, hitting eight of 12 free throws. Prescott was two of five at the stripe. JUNIOR DEVILS 32 CURLEY CUBS 28 A win by the junior boys team gave Gurdon a two-of-three night at home as the Devils posted a 32-28 win over the Curley Cubs. The game got underway about an hour late because the officials were stuck between Hot Springs and Arkadelphia by a traffic accident. When they arrived, it was decided the junior game would be two 10 minute halves. Gurdon jumped all over Prescott in the first 10 minute frame, taking a 20-5 lead. Prescott, though, did battle back in the second half to make the final score more respectable. Joseph Stewart was the game's leading scorer for Prescott with 22 points. Gurdon was led by Kelly's 10.
