Smokey The Bear Visits County SchoolsPublished Wednesday, December 8, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneSmokey Bear has been making his rounds to several Nevada County schools. Forester Maggie Arrington presented a program with the assistance of Ranger John Beasley about fire safety. During the elementary (Nevada third graders and second and third grades at Emmet) program, the students were shown safety equipment and clothing that the Arkansas Forestry Commission wears while fighting fires. The students also watched a video about the history of Smokey Bear. Smokey Bear told the kids not to play with matches and talked about preventing forest wildfires. The Presbyterian Day Care and Emmet kindergarten through second grade watched a video about Smokey Bear and his friends in the forest. The children also got to shake Smokey Bear's hand.
