Bluff CityJerry McKelvyPublished Wednesday, December 8, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune News is scarce around here for this week. The number of deer hunters seems to have decreased. I'm not sure who got the most deer this season the hunters or the motorists. It seems everywhere I go, I see a deer carcass on the road. I have heard of several people being hurt by car-deer collisions or from trying to avoid hitting a deer. I've noticed some major construction work going on at White Oak Lake State Park along Mill Creek. I don't know what they have in mind, but it's good to see signs of progress. It's time to get started on that Christmas shopping. If you wanted to avoid the crowds, you're probably too late. Several people of this area have been over to Arkadelphia to check out the new Wal-Mart Supercenter. Do you remember what Christmas shopping was like before Wal- Mart? People look at Christmas in different ways. Some have a 'Ho, ho, ho' attitude and others have a 'Bah, humbug' attitude. For some, it is a time of joy, excitement and anticipation. For others, it is a time of stress and depression. Some people shop early and others wait to the last minute. Some think it is just for children. Some people are careful not to overspend and others spend half the next year paying off the debts from Christmas. I sort of agree with a man named Kin Hubbard, who said, "There are too blamed many ways to spend money and not enough new ways to get it." Seventeen days and counting.
