Prescott's senior girls continued to dominate Gurdon on the basketball court as they posted a 67-51 win Tuesday, Dec. 30.

The win was the seventh in a row for Wolverette Coach Bill Cossey against Gurdon.

The Lady Devils did manage to control the tip and score first, with the race being on from there.

It was a typical Prescott-Gurdon game tough, brutally physical and hard fought.

The Lady Devils tried to make a game of it early as they took a 5-2 lead, pushing it to a 10-7 advantage with 3:38 left in the first period.

Gurdon's girls were all over the Wolverettes early, but didn't have what it took to stay with Prescott.

Andrea Cossey gave Prescott its first lead on a three-pointer, following this with a pass to Traci Graham for two to make it 12-11 with 2:11 showing.

From there, Cossey began putting on a three-point clinic as she hit three in the first quarter. She ended the night with 30 points, including six treys.

The period ended with Prescott holding a 16-13 lead.

The Wolverettes were in the bonus as the second quarter began. But, Prescott didn't need any help as its offense exploded.

Cossey hit two more threes to extend Prescott's lead to 24-15 with 5:44 showing, while Graham did most of the inside work for the team.

These two showed what teamwork was all about as the ball flew back and forth between them, as well as up and down the court.

Halftime arrived with the Wolverettes in control 38-19, having only surrendered six points in the frame.

The third quarter was much the same, with the exception being Gurdon scored more.

The Lady Devils did themselves more harm than good at the start of the second half, as they were hit with three fouls in 90 seconds, while Prescott was methodical on both sides of the ball.

When all was said and done, Prescott was up 52-35 as the game headed into the final eight minutes.

The Wolverettes were patient in the fourth period, moving the ball around, working for the best shot.

Cossey spent the fourth quarter working to clear his bench and get all the players into the game.

Gurdon's desperation showed as the Lady Devils fired from the perimeter in order to try and get back in the game.

However, even Prescott's bench proved to be more than the Lady Devils could handle as they worked to shut down Gurdon's offense.

Graham followed Cossey in scoring with 24 on the night.

Vanesha Young led the Lady Devils with 14 points. Sonya Beasley chipped in a dozen, while Tiffany Ware added 10.

Prescott was nine of 20 from the free throw line, while Gurdon hit six of 10.

WOLVES 40

DEVILS 56

Prescott's senior boys didn't fare as well as the girls did, as they went down 56-40.

Gurdon, though, was out to exact revenge after the Wolves posted a come-from-behind win in the first game of the season.

The Devils were all over Prescott in the first period, jumping out to a 13-4 lead.

By halftime the Devils had padded their advantage to 25-10 as the Wolf offense was dormant.

Prescott fought back in the second half, but was unable to overcome a poor first two periods.

The Wolves won the third quarter 14-9 to cut the lead to 34-24.

Kevin Fulkes led the Wolf offense with 18 as the only player for Prescott in double figures.

RaShaun Hopson led Gurdon with 15, while Glenn netted 12, Anderson had 11 and Hatley scored 10.

Prescott was two of five at the line, while Gurdon hit eight of 12 free throws.

CURLEY CUBS 28

JUNIOR DEVILS 32

Prescott's junior boys went down to defeat, 32-28, at the hands of Gurdon's junior team.

The game was played in two 10-minute halves as the officials arrived about an hour late after being blocked by an accident between Hot Springs and Arkadelphia.

The Devils took a 20-5 lead to the locker room at the break, only to see the Cubs fight back to make a game of it.

Prescott won the second half 23-12, but lost the overall battle.

Joseph Stewart led Prescott with 22 points.

Kelly paced Gurdon with 10.

The Cubs were six of 10 at the stripe, while Gurdon hit two of four.

The Wolves and Wolverettes will next take to the court Thursday in the opening round of the Lakeside Classic in Hot Springs.

Each team is guaranteed to play at least three games, as the classic is scheduled to end Saturday.

The Wolverettes play at 7 p.m. Thursday, followed by the Wolves at 8:30.
