Thanksgiving Dinner Is HeldPublished Wednesday, December 1, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneOn Saturday night, November 20, the Boys to Men and Girls to Women (BM-GW) sponsored its second Thanksgiving celebration at the Prescott Middle School cafetorium. Kenny Wiley and Marie Smallwood, both eleventh graders, were the emcees. Invocation was given by Shana Johnson and Luther Stueart, both seventh graders. A delicious dinner, consisting of turkey and dressing, baked ham with the trimmings was served. Soft music was playing while dinner was being served. Entertainment was provided by the BM-GW choir under the direction of Yvonne Thomas, music teacher. Karen McKinnon, sixth grade reading teacher, recognized and presented certificates of achievement to all the BM-BW honor roll students. A poem writing competition was held again this year with the winners from each school reading his or her entry. The theme was 'My Best Thanksgiving'. The first place winners from each school received a $25 Wal-Mart money card and an achievement award. Hyacinth Deon, curriculum coordinator for the Prescott School District, presented the awards to Candice Gill, third grader; Jeremy Henry and Joshua Parrish, sixth graders, and Tiffany Young, an eleventh grader. Guest speaker was Ron Wright, superintendent of the Prescott District, was introduced by Crystal Moss (cover Miss Arkansas), a 12th grade. Wright's subject was 'Respect for Others.' He gave a recipe for happiness, 'Joy': 1) Jesus first; 2) others deserve respect; and 3) yourself how to help yourself be a better person. He encouraged the students to be their best and always treat others like you would want to be treated. Don't let anyone discourage you from reaching your potentials in life, he admonished the group of students. The closing item on the program was a saxophone solo 'Amazing Grace' by Kenny Wiley.
