Bluff CityJerry McKelvyPublished Wednesday, December 1, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune I guess everyone gained a pound or two over the holiday. Most everyone had their families home for Thanksgiving. We celebrated in Missouri as we do every year. I read that there is a chemical in turkey meat that makes you tired. That may be true, because everyone in our group tended to get very sleepy after lunch. Vince Nelson was home doing some deer hunting before Thanksgiving. Andy Nelson brought Lauren and Elizabeth down to see Grandma and Grandpa and they attended church with James and Kay. Tyler Carman had a birthday party recently. He went to see the Pokemon movie in Camden, which I'm sure he enjoyed. I believe the McBrides made a trip to Austin, Texas, to visit their son, Doug, and his family. Charles and Patricia Farr were 'far' away in North Arkansas last week. It's time to catch up on our history again for the month on November. It was in November of 1989 that the old D.E. Harvey store building in Bluff City burned to the ground. It was operated for many years by Ed and Gladys Harvey. When Mrs. Harvey retired, it was run by Eddie Allen and by the Buchanans at the time it was destroyed by fire. I'm sure everyone around Bluff City remembers shopping at this old country store. Here is a list of people of this area who passed away during the month of November in the past 30 years or so: Con Harvey in 1967; Verna Nelson in 1968; Ashley DeWoody in 1972; Ibra Plyler in 1974; Minnie Barlow Greening in 1975; Artee Redfearn in 1978; Mary Lee Byrd in 1982; Charline Barlow in 1983; Sula Nichols Robinson in 1985; Robert 'Bob' Johnson in 1985; Myrtie McKelvy Irvin in 1994; and Dawson Barlow in 1995. Some of these had moved to nearby towns in later years. Another tidbit: It was 19 years ago in November that we found out who shot J.R. on the television show Dallas. Do you remember who it was? Someone once said, "When an old person dies, it's like a library burning to the ground." Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
