Wolverettes Defeat Nevada And Blevins Squads, Now 4-0BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 1, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott's Wolverettes rolled over Blevins like a juggernaut 67-39. The game, played Tuesday, Nov. 23, proved to be little more than a warm up for Prescott as the Wolverettes are on the hunt to return to the state championship game. The win kept their record unblemished at 4-0, on the young season. Prescott didn't start out particularly well. After winning the toss, the Wolverettes lost the ball out of bounds, giving it to the Lady Hornets. However, Blevins returned the favor, giving the pumpkin back to Prescott. From there it was Katy bar the door as the Wolverette offense came alive. Jeania Haynie opened scoring with a deuce with Traci Graham firing away from the arc. At the 5:32 mark, Prescott led 8-2 and showed no signs of being merciful. The Lady Hornets did battle on the boards for rebounds, packing the lanes to keep Prescott from getting easy shots on the inside. But it didn't matter as the Wolverette outside game was ON. The Lady Hornets showed patience on offense, working the ball for the best shot. With 1:52 showing, Prescott held a 13-6 lead. Haynie would be the final Wolverette to score in the first quarter as she initially fielded a behind-the-back pass from Andrea Cossey for two, then hit another at the buzzer to put Prescott up 17-9. Period two was much like period one as Prescott dominated. Blevins made a mistake early on by allowing Graham to shoot threes with no defender in her face. The Wolverettes also made life difficult on the Lady Hornets by pressing and trapping, thereby forcing bad passes or turnovers. With 6:45 to go in the half, Prescott was up 22-9, and Blevins was on the ropes. Though the Lady Hornets tried, their guests controlled all aspects of the game, with Prescott looking to run at every opportunity. Graham nailed a trey at the 3:56 mark, with Haynie popping a couple of free throws at the 3:39 point. During the final two minutes of the half, Graham and Cossey ruled. Prescott led 39-14 at the break. The third quarter opened with neither team having bothered to warm up during intermission. Blevins managed to open scoring, only to have to contend with the slick passing game the Wolverettes had brought to the table. The Lady Hornets had trouble figuring out where the ball was going whenever Graham or Cossey had it, as the two would dish in all directions. On the other hand, the Wolverette defense was continually working to pick the pocket of any player not dressed in maroon and white. With 3:14 showing Cossey fired a bomb downcourt to Graham, who fielded the pass for an easy layup and two more points. Still, with the score 51-22, the Lady Hornets wouldn't quit. The Blevins quintet battled to get back into the game, but simply didn't have the answer to the question posed by Prescott's offense and defense. As the buzzer sounded to end the third quarter, Cossey nailed a three to make the score 55-27. Coach Bill Cossey began clearing the bench in the final eight minutes, getting the subs some valuable game time. Graham ended the game with 28 points, while Cossey stroked the nets for 16. Haynie finished with 10. Jordan was Blevins' leading scorer with 19. The Wolverettes were five of eight from the charity stripe, while Blevins hit five of seven free throw attempts. PRESCOTT 47 NEVADA 37 The Wolverettes were sluggish against the Lady Blue Jays of Nevada Monday, Nov. 22, but managed to pull off a 46-37 win. Early on neither team could buy a basket, though the Lady Jays were the more aggressive of the two squads. The teams kept a good pace going throughout the contest, but couldn't consistently run their offenses or defenses. It took more than two-and-a-half minutes for either team to score, with Cossey getting the game's first points. Prescott went up 4-0, only to see Nevada rally to take a 5-4 lead shortly thereafter. Nevada's defense inside did keep the Wolverettes off the boards during the early part of the outing. Period one ended with Prescott holding a 13-8 lead. Nevada's girls were able to hang with Prescott, allowing the Wolverettes only one shot, while getting two or three after a miss on the other end of the court. The Lady Jays spread their offense all across the floor to hamper Prescott's pressing defense. This worked as Nevada was able to work the ball downcourt for its shots without being harassed too badly. Still, halftime arrived with Prescott holding a 23-17 lead. The Lady Jays fired a serious salvo to start the third quarter, opening with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 23-23. Prescott responded with four quick points to go up 27-23, and the fight was on. Both teams fought for every loose ball and shot. However, late in the quarter Cossey began finding her range from outside and started bombing away. The fourth period began with Prescott up 35-25. Nevada played Prescott evenly in the final eight minutes, refusing to go down without a battle, but ultimately didn't have the weaponry to combat the Wolverettes. Graham and Cossey scored 16 each for Prescott, while Haynie added 10. Pam Young led Nevada with 11 points. Prescott was four of seven from the line, while Nevada hit one of six. PRESCOTT 62 UMPIRE 52 Saturday, Nov. 20, the Wolverettes traveled to Van Cove to play in the Cove Classic. Their lone game was a 62-52 win over the Umpire Lady Wildcats, who brought their lunch and came to play. Prescott managed a 17-15 lead after one, but wound up trailing 32-29 at the break as the Lady 'Cats clawed their way to the lead. This didn't set well with the Wolverettes as they bared their fangs in the second half, going up 41-40 at the end of three, and outscoring Umpire 21-12 in the final eight minutes. Cossey was the leading scorer for Prescott with 22, with Graham ripping the cords for 21. Haynie again added 10. Pinson paced Umpire with 22, while Manesco scored 12. The Wolverettes were eight of 16 from the line, with the Lady 'Cats converting 12 of 17. The Wolverettes will open conference play Friday, Dec. 3, as they host the Bismarck Lady Lions.
