Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, November 24, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesWhen you are reading our news, we will be out for Thanksgiving. We had a very busy week before taking time off. Those eighth graders are so busy learning in-depth study of the United States Constitution that they can hardly wait until they are tested on all of the new knowledge acquired (hopefully). The CMS Student Council assembly recognized the citizen students for the month. They are fifth grader Branaie Weems; sixth grader Marco Giles; seventh grader Haleigh McDaniel; and eighth grader Kim Hulan. The Beta student of the month is Lynsey McKenzie. These students will get to go eat lunch with Jeff Alexander, CMS principal. The guests for the assembly were two international students enrolled at OBU. Dr. Bill Dixon, director of the International Student Program, introduced the two students. Garth Lombard is from South Africa and a music major at OBU. He entertained the students as he was singing and playing the guitar. Franc Schimunek from Germany explained his major as Biblical study. The two answered several questions that had been written by the CMS students. Kriss Davies, JoLee Jester and Lynsey McKenzie asked the questions to the guests. The humor, as well as the seriousness, was very evident. The assembly was enjoyed and several have asked for the two to come back again. I understand that there are some girls who do not plan to wash a certain hand again. Oh, was it the one that shook the hand of the guests? Ann Clingan cannot praise the Student Council members enough. She can ask them to do things that they did not know they could and the outcome is like that of professionals. You would think that they stand and talk to a large group of people every day. If they are nervous, it certainly is not noticeable. Good job. The new-to-be Betas had an unusual Thursday and Friday. They were to be inducted into Beta Tuesday, November 23. Thursday the students wore to school what they slept in the night before. As difficult as it is to believe, they looked great. Now, it must be said that Ashley Caviness really looked as though she had a good night's rest in her gown and nightcap. Friday, those students dressed a little different. The girls dressed as boys and the boys dressed as girls. Caleb Nolan really got the eyes as he strolled down the hall in heels, skirt and big top. Taylor Morehead had the cutest eye-makeup and the most desired earrings. Blake Deaton really knew how to put that hand on the hip and pose for pictures, as did Ben Gooding, although Ben had difficulty getting the lipstick just on the lips. The girl-boy group was just as interesting. Taylor Pace and Blair Griffin did not have time to shave before coming to school, as their mustaches and goatees were more than a little noticeable, get the message. Katie Barbaree looked as though she had just come in from the deer stand or the war zone. The hat was very becoming. The new Beta students are Katie Barbaree, Alecia Bell, Ashley Caviness, Christiana Daniels, Blake Deaton, Caleb Deaton, Sydney Foshee, Ben Gooding, Blair Griffin, Haley Griffin, Britta Halliday, Kolby Harper, Jernik Henry, Christa Hopson, Jessie Livingston, Haleigh McDaniel, Taylor Morehead, Taylor Pace, Ashley Powell, Jordan Purifoy, Melanie Shults, Amy Stiffler, Teshima Surbaugh and Lezlee White. Congratulations to each of you. The Beta Club provided a delicious lunch from Allen's Barbecue to show appreciation to the teachers during National Education Week. Needless to say, it was delicious. A big thank you to the Betas and sponsors, Linda Bullard and Cena Clark. Several seventh and eighth grade students attended the annual young author's conference sponsored by Dawson Education Cooperative. The students first heard local Arkansas author Kent Ross, who spoke about the elements of a story. They attended a session featuring Nancy Dunaway, professor of art, who spoke on the techniques of illustrating. Both sessions were very informative. The day was finished off by eating pizza at Mazzio's and then enjoying dessert at TCBY. Kay Downey accompanied the students to the workshop. School will dismiss Tues., Nov. 23. at 2:00 p.m. and be out until Mon. Nov. 29. for the Thanksgiving holiday. Also, Tues., Nov. 30. school will dismiss at 2:00 p.m. for teacher in- service. Remember if you would like to purchase a CMS Yearbook from the Student Council, please send $15 to Cabe Middle School. Thank you for your interest and support for us as we make those Classy Moments at CMS. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
