Living Well

This is the season of the year that many people take trips for extended periods of time. It is also the time when burglars do their best work.

Hamper their activity by being a little more security conscience with the following hints.

  • Keep your jewelry and valuables anywhere except in dresser drawers and night table drawers. That is the first place a burglar would look. Make it hard to find, because time is what a burglar does not have. It is quick-in and quick-out for thieves.
  • Thieves hate bright lights. Install motion-sensor lights or outdoor lights and keep them on all night.
  • Keep the yard clean; prune shrubs so doors and windows are visible.
  • Neighborhood watch organizations drastically reduce crime.
  • Use an alarm or display an alarm sticker.
  • Ask a neighbor to pick up your mail and newspapers.
  • Make it seem as though someone is always at home use timers for lights inside and outside your house.
  • Get a dog or a dog house!

Remember, most house burglars spend just 60 seconds trying to break in before giving up and moving on. So make your home hard to get into.

Contact the Nevada County Extension Service for more tips around the house.
