County Approved For Program

Nevada County has been approved for the Livestock Assistance Program, (LAP). Applications may be taken immediately through January 21 for losses on pasture.

The program loss period is July 1, through October 31, 1999. Livestock must have been owned for at least 90 days to be eligible.

Eligible producers are those who possess beneficial interest and have financial risk in the livestock; have completed 'person' determination forms; have suffered a 40% loss of available grazing for 90 consecutive days or more; are citizens of, or legal resident aliens in the United States; and earned less than 2.5 million gross annual revenue in the tax year preceding the year in which the loss occurred.

Those wanting to participate must have the number and type of livestock owned during calendar year 1999; the acres, location and type of grass or forage on which loss occurred; the percent of grazing loss; and information about changes in livestock numbers and dates when changes in livestock numbers occurred.

The type of livestock eligible are beef and dairy cattle; buffalo or beefalo when maintained on the same basis as beef cattle; sheep, goats, swine and equine animals used commercially for human food or kept for the production of food or fiber on the producer's farm and owned or leased for at least 90 days.

Applications should be made at the Farm Service Agency office for Nevada County producers at 2510 North Hervey in Hope.
