Nevada Drops TwoBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, November 24, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune Nevada's Blue Jays dropped two of three games to Blevins recently, with the Lady Jays the only team to record a win. NEVADA 57 BLEVINS 63 The Jays continued having problems on the hardwood as they dropped a tough one to the Hornets. Period one saw Blevins jump out to an 18-15 lead and stretch this to a 10-point advantage by halftime with the score 38-28. Nevada fought back in the second half, trying to pull out a win, but fell short. At the end of three the Hornets were up 54-40. The Jays were nine of 14 from the line, while Blevins hit 14 of 17 free throws. Keon Page led Nevada with 20 points, while Jason Yarbrough added 10. Marcel Johnson continued showing why he is one of the top prep players in this part of the state with a 29 point performance. Calvin Newton contributed 13 in the win. LADY JAYS 55 LADY HORNETS 50 Nevada's senior girls had their hands full, but managed to pull out a 57-51 win over the Lady Hornets of Blevins. Period one had the visiting Lady Hornets taking advantage of being guests with an 11-10 lead. They added to this in the second quarter, outscoring Nevada 13-12, to go up 24-22 at the break. However, the second half belonged to the Lady Jays as they stormed out in the third quarter, tying the game at 38-38, and whipped the Lady Hornets 19-13 in the final eight minutes for the victory. Nevada was 11 of 20 at the charity stripe, with Blevins netting 11 of 18 free throw attempts. Erica Loudermill led the way for Nevada with 20, while Jackie House stroked the nylons for 16. Tasha Martin paced Blevins with 17, with Alison Jordan ripping the nets for 14. JUNIOR JAYS 39 JUNIOR HORNETS 44 Blevins opened the junior boys game with a 10-8 lead and never looked back. By halftime the Hornets had increased their lead to 26-14, and were up 34-25 at the end of three, holding the Jays off in the final six minutes to preserve the win. The junior teams will be in the Blevins Invitational Nov. 29 through Dec. 4, while the next scheduled outing for the senior squads will be Nov. 30 as they visit Saratoga.
