Velma Hayes Wingfield

Velma Hayes Wingfield was born Aug. 21, 1920 in Waldo to Edward Johnson and Annie Maybel (Cook) Hayes. She was reared and educated in Arkadelphia.

In Gurdon, she met Bill Wingfield and they were married there on Dec. 4, 1937. They lived in several oilfield communities in Louisiana, Colorado, and Texas, before coming to Midland, Texas in 1963 from Kermit, Texas. She and her husband owned and operated the Shell Station at Louisiana and Andrews highway.

Mr. Wingfield died in Nov. of 1974. Mrs. Wingfield joined MISD in the food service in 1975 where she worked until her retirement. Also during the 1980's she cooked at the Midland Women's Club. Mrs. Wingfield was a member of Crestview Baptist Church. She also taught ceramics classes at the Midland, Texas Senior Citizens Center after her retirement.

Mrs. Wingfield died at a local hospital Monday, Nov. 15 following a six-year illness.

She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Peggy J. and Milt Ruhl of Millegeville, Ga. and Charlotte A. and Alvin Hammon of Midland, Texas; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at Center Grove Methodist Church in Gurdon under the direction of Horne Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Center Ridge Cemetery in Gurdon. Ellis Funeral Home is handling the local arrangements.
