TOO MUCH SUNPublished Wednesday, June 23, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneAccording to the American Cancer Society over 300,000 Americans develop sun-related skin cancers each year. Fortunately, these cancers are very curable if treated in time. A sore that doesn't heal, a change in size or color of a mole, or the development of any unusual pigmented area should be checked. They could be skin cancer only a doctor's examination can determine this for sure. Ultra-violet rays are the strongest between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Stay inside. Remember 70 to 80 percent of the sun's ultra-violet rays can penetrate clouds and overcast skies. When outdoors, cover as much skin as possible with a hat that shades the face, neck and ears, and a long-sleeved shirt and long pants. Sun screen comes in various strengths, graded by the solar protection factor (SPF). Use a sun screen with an SPF of 15 or higher. Because of the possible link between severe sunburns in childhood and greatly increased risk of melanoma in later life, children in particular should be protected from the sun. Those with fair skin, redheads and blondes (those who do not tan well), are at special risk and should take special precautions. Note that you don't have to feel hot to be burning.
