Lonoke Defeats Gosnell, 35-7Published Wednesday, November 17, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe Curley Wolves took care of business easy enough last Friday night in the state play- offs by defeating Piggott 62-7, but the biggest game of the year for the Prescott football team is this Friday when Lonoke comes to town. The Jackrabbits beat the Gosnell Pirates, 35-7, last Friday to advance. Gosnell won second place in the 3AAA Conference. Lonoke is the third place team in the 6AAA Conference. The Wolves don't need to think all teams are going to be as easy as last week's Mohawks. They won't be. Certainly not Lonoke. The Jackrabbits are geared for the play-offs. Playing on other people's turfs, they have nothing to lose, being a third place team. Therefore, they will try anything in the book, and may bring a few plays not in the book. In other words, they will be tougher and very well could do it with determination. That's why Prescott needs to concentrate on Lonoke and not be glorying on last week's run-away. The team needs to decide if they want to continue in the play-offs or start playing basketball. In other games concerning teams from the 7AAA Conference, Nashville is the only one of the three which advanced. The Scrappers (2nd) took an easy 46-6 win from Huntsville (3rd 1AAA) and will travel to Rivercrest (W 3AAA) this week. Rivercrest eliminated the Fordyce Redbugs (4th 7AAA) 20-9 last week. Now the Colts will welcome another 7AAA school to the banks of the Mississippi. Nashville, though, is a different caliber from Fordyce. The Scrappers don't scare easily and are more experienced in the play-offs. They very well could come back with a victory. Another 7AAA team eliminated last week was De Queen (3rd). The Marianna Trojans (2nd 6AAA) took a 34-7 victory over the Leopards. The Trojans are in the same bracket as Prescott. This week Marianna will travel to Green Forest (W 1AAA). Last week the Tigers beat Dollarway (4th 6AAA), 14-6, to advance. If Prescott wins this week, the Curley Wolves will play the winner of the Green Forest- Marianna game. One of the best aids the Curley Wolves can have is its fans. The PHS Stadium needs to be filled to capacity with home town folks, not with fans from Lonoke. It's your opportunity to see a team that wasn't supposed to win first place. This team has come a long ways since early in the season, thanks to fewer mistakes, a better defense and offense, determination, a strong coaching staff and fans like you. Now fans need to support them in the play-offs. A home team crowd means a lot to the players. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
