PHS Offense Shows Up Against Helpless Mohawks

Published Wednesday, November 17, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune

Not only did Prescott's defense shine Friday night, but it's offense did also as the Curley Wolves cruised to an easy 62-7 win over the Piggott Mohawks. The Wolves continue in the state play-offs this Friday at home when they will host the Lonoke Jackrabbits.

After the Prescott defense allowed a Piggott TD in the first quarter, they virtually shut down the often-confusing offense. It wasn't easy to determine who had the ball standing on the sidelines, so it had to be tough on the defense.

The Big Wolfgang D allowed five first downs in the first quarter, four in the second and only one in the second half. They just wore the Mohawks down.

Offensively, the Curley Wolves never had to punt the entire game; only once did they lose the ball on downs when going on fourth down.

Seven different players scored touchdowns during the game. Six TD's were scored during the second half as the running game got stronger and the Piggott defense became more ragged. They were just bone-tired.

Piggott received the kickoff and made one first down before losing the ball on downs. The Mohawks were at the Prescott 39 and only liked two yards for a first down. They made one with Prescott getting the turnover on its own 38.

The Wolves were geared to run against the Mohawks, so it was a surprise when they came out passing. Nonetheless, the pass intended for Andrew Fellows fell incomplete.

On the next play, running back Terry Woodley swept to his left and went 23 yards for a first down at the Piggott 39-yard-line.

Rafael Marlow picked up eight yards on first down, then Woodley gained one more. On third down Woodley picked up five yards for the first down.

Woodley again got the call and gained seven more yards before Marlow got the first down at the 11-yards line of Piggott.

From there it was easy for Woodley to get in the end zone for the fist TD of the night. The kick for the extra point by Antone 'Stick' Purifoy was good to make the score 7-0 with 5:43 left in the quarter.

But Piggott's twisted offense proved too much for Prescott on the next series of downs. Two quarterbacks were used: Sonny Rodery and Marshall Householder.

The Mohawks lost a yard, then gained five on the ground before Daniel Landrum caught a pass that moved the ball into Prescott's end of the field at the 27.

The Mohawks picked up two more first downs getting the ball to Prescott's three-yard line, where Householder took it in on a sneak play. The extra-point kick by Danny Wilson was good to make the score 7-7 with 1:36 left in the period, just enough time for Prescott to score again.

Calvin Flemons took the Piggott kick-off at the 20 and wasn't stopped until he got to the Piggott 42-yard line, where the Wolves began its next drive, which only took two plays.

Woodley gained 20 yards on first down and picked up a first down. Marlow then got more than a first down by going into the end zone for another TD. The point after try by Purifoy was blocked to keep the score at 13-7 with 56 seconds left in the quarter.

The Mohawks took Prescott's kick-off at the 16 and began its next series of plays at their 32 after a 16-yard return by Householder.

They had only made two yards early in the second period when they had to punt. The snap went over the head of Householder with Prescott taking over on the Piggott nine-yard line.

Josh Bullock tried another pass, this time to Edward Glenn in the end zone. It fell incomplete. Woodley then gained eight yards on the ground, getting to the one. The Wolves were called for illegal procedure on the next play, moving the ball back to the six, but Woodley made up the difference and went in for another score. On a two-point attempt, Bullock connected with Fellows to bring the score up to 21-7 with 10:19 left in the half.

Piggott picked up two more first downs and then Flemons intercepted a pass around the 30 and went 14 yards before he was stopped.

The Wolves could not make a first down and Piggott took over on downs at the Prescott 49. They managed to move the ball 31 yards before they stalled and Prescott took over on their own 18.

Bullock and Flemons made a first down in two plays, getting the ball to their 38. Then Bullock attempted another pass. This time it was intercepted as the half was getting ready to end.

Prescott only had seven first downs during the two periods while Piggott had nine. The Curley Wolves had rushed for 143 yards while giving up 123. They had permitted the Mohawks another 47 yards in the air for a total of 170. Each team had been intercepted once.

Prescott took a bad kick-off to begin the second half and it took seven plays to score again.

Beginning on their 37, Woodley got the first call and went 24 yards for a first down to the Mohawks 39.

Bryan Joseph came in off the bench and went 19 yards for another first down. Then Woodley gained 11 for yet another, moving the ball to the nine-yard line.

Joseph was stopped on the next play for no gain and Woodley was stopped in the backfield for a loss of six yards, bringing up another passing play. Bullock connected with Woodley at the one. Woodley was stopped short of the goal line by about a foot, but Bullock 'sneaked' in for the TD on the next play. Purifoy's kick was good tomake the score 28-7 with 9:17 left in the period.

Fred Hopson did the honors on the kick-off for Prescott, keeping the ball on the ground. Piggott recovered it on its 32. Four plays later the Mohawks punted with Brad Harris taking the punt at his 30 and moving the ball to the 45, where he fumbled, but Gabe Morman fell on the loose ball for the Curley Wolves.

Woodley took the ball six yards on first down, and then went 15 yards on the second play of this series.

Marlow got the next call and picked up another first down at the Piggott 19. Then Woodley got another first down at the four, where Flemons took it in on first down. This time Purifoy's toe missed for the score to remain 34-7.

Coach David Bennett's kicking game paid off on the kick-off as Hopson's squibbler was recovered for Prescott by Keon Sockwell at the Piggott 47.

Bullock was sacked as he went back to pass, moving the ball back to his 42. Woodley managed to get back the lost yardage on the next play, then he gained 20 on third down.

Joseph rushed for nine yards on the next play and Woodley got the first down at the 12 on the next.

Flemons took the hand-off on the next play and went in for the TD. The kick by Purifoy was good to make the score 41-7.

The quarter ended with Piggott on the ball at mid-field. On fourth and seven the Mohawks failed to convert once more with the Curley Wolves taking over on their own 45 yard line.

On first down Sockwell took the hand-off from a fresh quarterback, Brad Harris. Sockwell found open field and went 55 yards for the score. Purifoy's kick was blocked for the score to remain 47-7.

Four plays later the Mohawks again missed a fourth down conversion with Prescott getting the ball at the Piggott 36.

Rico Hopper gained one yard on the first play, Sockwell lost it on the next. Hopper again got the call and picked up a first down at the Piggott 11-yard line.

Hopper gained two on the next play, then Harris took it in on a quarterback bootleg. Hopson kicked the extra point to make it 54-7.

Piggott only gained three yards on its next possession and had to punt, but Householder kicked the ball into a team mate in front of him and Prescott was only 22 yards away from another score. Enter tackles as running backs.

Dennis Hopson picked up six yards for the Wolves on the first play, but a penalty against Prescott moved the ball back to the 21 on the next. Brian Woodley moved the ball seven yards on second down and then Chris Gulley got the first down at the Piggott 10.

Big Anton 'BC' Purifoy found running room to his left on the next play and went in for the TD. Prescott set up for the extra point, but went the ball arrived to Ronnie Nolen, who was to be the holder, picked it up and ran for a two-point conversion to make the final score 62-7.

For the third time in the same quarter, the Mohawks tried to convert on fourth down, and for the third time it failed, so Prescott had the ball as the game ended.

Woodley, the games leading rusher, rushed for 188 yards on 20 carries. He averaged 9.4 yards a carry. The Wolves rushed for a total of 399 yards during the game while the Mohawks rushed for a total of 166. Prescott finished with a total of 414 offensive yards. Piggott had a total of 214.

The Curley Wolves finished with 21 first downs, nine of them in the third period. Piggott had 10.

Bullock had one pass intercepted and he completed one for 15 yards. Piggott's quarterback completed two for 52 yards and had one interception.

Each team was penalized four times for a total of 20 yards. That's the way the Prescott team must play to accomplish its goal: a state-wide championship.

The match-up this Friday at PHS Stadium against the Lonoke Jackrabbits will be quite different from last week's. The Rabbits know

how to play ball: they play in a tough conference much like Prescott. Brinkley, Dollarway and Marianna are just three of the teams they have to compete with; they know how to play.

The Curley Wolves need to forget the blow-away of last week and concentrate on the Jackrabbits, or there will not be another game this year.

Kick-off time is7:30. Prescott fans need to be there. PHS does not set gate admission prices for the play-offs, the Arkansas Activities Association (AAA) does. Regular passes will not admit the holder. Only those from the AAA will be honored.

In addition to the game, which should be an outstanding one, the fans can see one of the best bands perform at halftime. That alone would be worth the admission.
