Emmet Teams Begin SeasonBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, November 17, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune Basketball season is underway at Emmet, with the Lady Eagles posting early wins. The senior boys, though, are still winless, but have fought bravely in each contest. LADY EAGLES Emmet's senior girls opened their season with a 65-63 loss to Kirby. At the end of the first eight minutes, Kirby was up 13-2, forcing the Lady Eagles to play catch up the rest of the game. By halftime the score was 31-19 as Emmet battled back. The third period had Emmet still down by 13 with the score 47-34. The Lady Eagles dominated the final frame. Free throws helped as Emmet was 11 of 16 at the stripe while Kirby was four of nine. Amanda Hodges led the way with 27 points. Rose Martin netted 17, while Amber Dougan stroked the nets for 11. Turner led Kirby with 26. Self had 16, with Garner adding 15. Game two saw Emmet fall to Emerson 44-36. It was 12-6 Emerson after one and 22-20 at the break. Emerson led 29-26 after three. This was a rare game as free throws had no effect on the outcome. Emmet was 0-2, while Emerson was a woeful two of 14. Hodges again led the Lady Eagles with 18. T. Robinson was the game's high scorer with 21, while T. McNeil added 10. The third game had the Lady Eagles pitted against McNeil and winding up on the short end of a 52-33 score. It was 11-9 McNeil after one, 26-15 at the half and 38-25 at the end of three. The Lady Eagles netted five of eight from the stripe, while McNeil hit eight of 14. Dougan and Hodges scored 10 each for Emmet. Effie Burrell and Marquita Murphy scored 13 each for McNeil, while Deidra Johnson had 11. From there it was a visit to the Lady Dragons of Genoa Central, where the Lady Eagles were grounded 49-28. Genoa was up 9-4 at the end of one; 18-9 at the half; and 29-21 after three. Emmet converted four of seven free throws, while Genoa was four of nine. Hodges led Emmet with 14. Brandy Humphries led all scorers with 19 for Genoa. From there it was a 51-46 loss to Spring Hill, as the Lady Eagles were showing signs of improvement with each outing. The Lady Bears opened with a 13-9 lead after one, holding on to a 26-21 advantage at the break and leading 45-34 after three. The Lady Eagles were 11 of 23 at the charity stripe, while Spring Hill was 12 of 18. Martin paced Emmet in this contest with 13, while Hodges stroked the nylon for 12. Cristal Robinson added 11. Lexia Bobo led all scorers with 22. Emmet left the state for its first win, drubbing Shongaloo, La. 73-30. The first quarter was close as Emmet led 12-8, but the Lady Eagles pulled away in the second period as the halftime score was 35-18. Emmet added a total of 38 points to its tally in the second half, leading 49-22 at the end of three. The Lady Eagles were .500 at the line, hitting nine of 18, while Shongaloo was eight of 18. Hodges had the hot hand, firing the rock through the hole for 28 points. Dougan was next with 20, while C. Robinson added 15. T. Lane led Shongaloo with 17, while T. Mims scored 12. Emmet made it two in a row with a 48-44 upset of Bright Star. The Lady Eagles took the lead early and never let it go. They were up 12-10 at the end of one, stretching this to a 27-18 advantage at the half. The third quarter score was 35-27. Emmet netted nine of 23 free throws, while Bright Star hit 16 of 30. Martin stepped up her game tossing in 23 points to lead Emmet. Hodges scored 14, while Dougan netted 12. B. Harris paced Bright Star with 26, while A. LaGardya added 10. SENIOR BOYS Emmet's senior boys have shown improvement as the season progresses, but have yet to win a game. The Eagles opened against Kirby, falling 59-32. Kirby led 11-2 at the end of one, was up 25-11 at the half, and led 41-23 after three. Emmet was six of 16 at the line, while Kirby was 13 of 24. Dee Muldrow led Emmet with 12. Game two saw Emmet fall 73-40 to Emerson. The Eagles played close the first half, trailing 14-13 at the end of one and 25-21 at the break. However, the second half Emerson's superior numbers showed as they pulled away from the Eagles. At the end of three Emmet trailed 53-29. Muldrow led the team with 12 points, while Gene Hopson added 10. T. Robinson led Emerson with 20, while D. Copeland scored 12. McNeil wasn't any kinder as Emmet went down 70-65. Emmet trailed 23-17 after one; was down 40-28 at the half but cut the gap to 58-42 by the end of three. Hopson led the way for Emmet with 27 points, while Carl Hurt added 17 and Jim Faulkner scored 12. Murrey and Berry led McNeil with 12 each. Genoa Central added to Emmet's woes with a 59-32 win. The Dragons led 20-13; 35-22; and 45-26 at the breaks. Hurt led Emmet with 13, while Blake Mason led all scorers with 21 for Genoa. The Eagles battled Spring Hill tooth and nail before falling 60-53. The Bears led 14-10 after one, but Emmet rallied to go up 34-29 at the half. The score was tied 45-45 after three, with Spring Hill's numbers being the difference in the final period. Hopson, Kerry Love and Muldrow each scored 15 for the Eagles. D. Bain was the game's leading scorer with 26. B. Flowers added 12 for the Bears. Emmet gave Shongaloo a battle, but fell short again, this time 67-58. The Eagles trailed 15-12 after one and 31-30 at the half. At the end of three, the score was 53-39. Muldrow led Emmet with 23, while Love netted 12. D. McDaniel led Shongaloo with 28, while J. Mendenhall added 22. Bright Star was unkind as it posted a 78-58 win against Emmet. Emmet did lead 15-9 after one and was up 29-21 at halftime, but again, superior numbers proved to be too much for the Eagles. At the end of three Bright Star was up 47-38 and never looked back,. Hopson led Emmet with 21, while Muldrow added 13. S. Patterson paced Bright Star with 14. M. Martin added 12, while B. Edson scored 10.
