Madge P. Burgess

Madge P. Burgess, 92, of Tyler, Texas, formerly of Hope, Prescott and Berryville, died Thursday, June 17, 1999, at Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler.

Mrs. Burgess was born April 21, 1907, in McNeil to Will and Lizzie Gunter Polk. She was a retired teacher and home economist for the Arkansas Agricultural Extension Service, having worked in Sevier, Nevada, Carroll and Polk Counties. She received her bachelors in 1936 and masters in 1964 from the University of Arkansas. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and an honorary member of the National Association of Home Economists. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. For the past four years she resided at Atria Briarcliff Retirement Center in Tyler. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas Burgess, one son, John P. Burgess, grandson, John T. Burgess, five brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include two sons, James T. Burgess of Pawcatuck, Conn., and Joe B. Burgess of Tyler; one sister, Callie Jameson of Smackover; eight grandchildren; and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Saturday, June 19, at First Presbyterian Church in Hope with Rev. Wayne Parker officiating. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Hope under the direction of Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home of Hope.
