County Offices Y2K ReadyBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, November 10, 1999 in the Gurdon Times Government offices for Clark County have been tested to be Y2K compliant. Clark County Judge Floyd "Buddy" Manning said the courthouse's computer system is in good shape and ready for the change at the first of the year. "We had people go through our system," he said, "and get it lined out. We're in the process of getting a generator for the health unit in case of a power outage." However, utility companies have previously stated they, too, are ready for Jan. 1, 2000, and should have no problem with the so-called Y2K bug. Manning said a generator will also be obtained for the courthouse as a safety precaution. When the computers were checked, he said, some had to be replaced, while others were upgraded, but all, now, are Y2K compliant. Still, he said, in case something unforeseen occurs the generator at the Office of Emergency Services (OES) and Clark County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) will be filled with fuel, as will all county equipment. Manning's plans for midnight Dec. 31, 1999, are to be at his office just in case there is a problem. Clark County Sheriff Troy Tucker said the CCSO computers are also ready for the new year. All have been tested and found to be compliant. This, he said, includes the 9-1-1 emergency telephone system. "I don't think anyone knows what will happen until the time gets here," Tucker said about the year 2000. Still, as a precaution, the computers were all checked to make sure they will be functional on Jan. 1, 2000. Where the Arkansas Crime Information Center (ACIC) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) systems are concerned, Tucker said the state is responsible for making sure they are able to handle Y2K. This, he said, has been done already as well. The biggest problem the CCSO could experience, Tucker said, would be if the phones don't work on Jan. 1, 2000. However, no problems are anticipated by the phone companies either. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
