Blue Jays Open Season 1-5; Lady Jays Now 4-2Published Wednesday, November 10, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe Nevada basketball teams are six games into the season and not doing as well as the coaches and fans would like. But the season is still young and things could change. In basketball the first time around is only half of it. The teams get to play each other the second time. The senior boys have only won one game. They beat Magnolia Walker, 75-57, on October 22. Through last week they Jays have lost, 53-50, to Benton Harmony Grove; to Emerson, 55-48; to Waldo, 66-53; to Saratoga, 70-62; and to Stephens, 67-51. The losses to Waldo and Stephens were conference games. The Blue Jays are now 0-2 in the 7AA Central Conference, which also includes Blevins, Gurdon, Lewisville, Genoa and Stamps. The Lady Jays are doing much better. They now have a 4-2 record overall and are 1-1 in the conference. Their only conference loss was last week against Stephens. However, earlier in the week the Lady Jays had lost to Saratoga. Coach Gloria Johnson was not satisfied with her team after the game Friday night, but believes there is a chance for a shot at the conference title. On October 28 her Lady Jays took a 53-43 conference win from Waldo. In that game Alexis Madison scored 17 points, Jackie House had 13 and Erica Loudermill scored 13. For Waldo it was Devy Davis with 15 points and Britnee Weaver with 10 points. NEVADA VS. SARATOGA The Saratoga Lady Bulldogs came from behind on Tuesday of last week to take a 41-38 victory over the Lady Jays. Nevada led 9-4 after one period and 20-19 at halftime. It was tied at 19 apiece going into the final period. Alexis Madison of Nevada was the game's leading scorer with 17 points. She connected with six field goals and she was five out of nine from the free throw line. Jackie House scored 10 points for Nevada, hitting four field goals and two of her four free shots. Others scoring for the Lady Jays were Jenifer Harding with 6 points and Erica Loudermill with 5. Chandra Carey of Saratoga led her team in the victory with 16 points, seven 2-pointers and she was two for two from the charity stripe. Nevada made 8 of 19 free throws while Saratoga made 7 of 13. The loss was the first for the Lady Jays. The senior boys also led the Bulldogs, but Saratoga came back strong in the final period and went ahead to win 70-61. Nevada had led 20-16 after one period, 27-26 at halftime and 45-40 after three quarters. R. Lewis of Saratoga was the game's leading scorer with 26 points. For Nevada it was Jason Yarbrough with 19 points and Keon Page with 13. Yarbrough finished with eight 2-pointers and he was 3 of 4 from the free throw line. Page hit four 2-pointers, three 3-pointers and he was 2 of 3 at the line. Three other plays were in double figures for Saratoga. J. Marshall scored 14 points, C. Rowe had 13 and D. Green scored 12. Others scoring for Nevada were Jamarrio Beasley and Matt Young with 8 points each; Jonathan House with 4; J.J. Lewis scored 3; and Geoffrey Box, Don Cross and Ronald Pearson all finished with 2 points apiece. NEVADA VS. STEPHENS Surprisingly, both Nevada teams kept up with the Roadrunners from Stephens in the beginning, although the Blue Jays had to come from behind to do so. Stephens finally coasted to a 67-51 victory over the Nevada senior boys, after leading by 23 points at one time. The Blue Jays showed some strength in the middle of the first period when they began to catch up and ended the period tied 17-17. In the middle of the second period, though, the Roadrunners began a big run that the Jays could not overcome. They stuffed the ball down the basket, stole the ball and did it again, then took it away again for another easy lay-up. This began the run-away the Roadrunners seem to do so easily. By halftime time they led 38-27. After three periods they led by 20 points, 53-33. Antario Glover scored 29 points for the Roadrunners, hitting 11 2-pointers, one 3-pointer and 4 of 5 free throws. Jamarrio Beasley hit three 3-pointers for Nevada to lead the Blue Jays with 15 points. He also hit two 2-pointers and he was 1 for 1 at the line. Jason Yarbrough scored 13 points for the Jays, hitting five 2-pointers and 3 of 4 free throws. Brandon Glover and Steve Todd of Stephens scored 14 and 13 points respectively for the Roadrunners. Glover had two 3-pointers, three 2-pointers and he was 2 of 4 from the line. Todd hit four 2-pointers, one 3-point shot and he was 2 of 7 from the charity stripe. Others adding to the score for Nevada were Geoffrey Box with 7 points; Keon Page with 6; Jonathan House had 3; and Ronald Pearson and Matt Young finished with 2 each. SCHEDULE This week the Nevada teams were to host Blevins on Tuesday for another conference game. Friday they will travel to Bradley.
