CenturyTel is the national communications sponsor of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program. Century Tel has worked in conjunction with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve to collect and distribute toys to disadvantaged children for three years.

This year CenturyTel has increased its participation from six states to 20, setting a collection goal of 100,000 toys.

Toy collection will occur from November 4 through December 22.

Built on the essence of giving, the Toys for Tots program has collected and distributed more than 243 million toys to 121 million disadvantaged children for the past 51 years.

The Toys for Tots program was founded in 1947 by Maj. Bill Hendricks of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in Los Angeles. The program was inspired by Hendricks' wife, Diane, when she made a Raggedy Ann doll for Hendricks to donate to a local organization to give to a disadvantaged child.

Hendricks realized that such an organization did not exist, and he decided to start the 'Toys for Tots' program.

Following its inception, Toys for Tots was adopted by the U.S Marine Corps Reserve in 1948, sending the program nationwide.

The main objective of the Toys for Tots program is to "bring the joy of Christmas to America's needy children." The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve asks communities and corporations to collect new, unwrapped toys, which are distributed to local social welfare agencies and churches.

CenturyTel provides integrated communications services including local exchange, wireless, long distance, Internet access and security monitoring services to more than two million customers in 21 states. The company, headquartered in Monroe, La., is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol CTL. CenturtyTel is the 9th largest local exchange telephone company, based on access lines, and the 10th largest cellular company, based on population equivalents owned, in the United States.
