Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, November 3, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesRed Ribbon week was celebrated at Cabe Middle School in various ways. Each student was given a red ribbon on Monday and they were to wear the ribbon each day. During first period, a name was drawn and if that person was wearing the ribbon they were given a free pop drink. Wednesday the students dressed 'professional.' They choose the profession that they plan to accomplish and dressed accordingly. There were lawyers, doctors, professional football and baseball players, hair stylist, sports announcers, teachers, homemakers and many others. When Blair Griffin entered Ann Clingan's classroom, she was asked "What do you have on?" Blair quickly replied, "A robe." "What profession does that represent?" "I'm a housewife." No more questions were needed. Thursday was hobo day. The cafeteria workers made sack lunches for all middle school students, who took their sacks outside for a picnic. It was a most enjoyable time, as this was the first time this was done. A big thank you to the cafeteria workers for making this a very special day. The afternoon was filled with various competitions as the students were in the gym for a fun time. The chain, made from the links bought by the students for a nickel a link, was the longest chain we have ever had. It completely circled the gym floor. The name on the link that broke received a prize. Several prizes were available. The money from the sale of the links will pay for the new banner, pins and other items to emphasize 'Say No To Drugs.' Students enjoyed the competitions, especially seeing their teachers using the hula hoops. Sheila Butler was the first teacher to reach the finish line while doing the 'hula.' The students cheered the teachers and really enjoyed watching the performance of the year. Citizen students were recognized for the month of October: fifth grade was Rafael Burford; sixth grade, Tiara Fulton; seventh grade, Toccara Laster; and eighth grade, Tiffanie Kilts. The Beta student of the month was Robin Lemay. Friday was tie day. I just wish you could have seen the variety of ties. We had the narrow, the wide, the very very wide, bow and some we are not sure how to label. Students were reminded that drugs are not needed to have fun. It was a week enjoyed by the students and faculty. The Beta Club sponsored a dance Thursday evening. The students at CMS can dance! It was such a great time, and one they will remember. The school days go by so fast, although the students don't think so. The memories they are making now will be treasures tomorrow. It seems as though we could go on and on about the activities at CMS, as we are always busy making those Classy Moments. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
