Trash to Treasure was the program given to the Red Springs Extension Homemakers Club by Betty Cook, cultural arts, clothing and textiles leader, at the Gurdon Municipal building Oct. 14.

Decorated tuna cans that holds Brill-O cleaner pads, a fabric covered foot stool from large juice cans, a table lamp from a syrup bottle and an umbrella holder from large coffee cans were a few items of many on display made from recycled throw-aways.

Visitor Lyn Lemay, the new county Extension Homemakers president, and 24 members answered roll call by naming a treasure made from trash.

The business session was opened by Jean Toland, past president, thanking the club for its cooperation the past two years, and then she turned the meeting over to the new president, Tootsie Dempsey.

Betty Cook installed the new officers and reminded them of their duties for the next two years.

A card from the Arkansas Cancer Research Center of Little Rock was read in appreciation of the mastectomy pillows made and given to the center.

The third beatitude for the homemaker says: "Blessed is she who mends stockings, toys and broken hearts; for her understanding is a balm to humanity," proves true for Tootsie Dempsey, Lorece Friemon, Denice Ezell and Betty Cook.

Recently they mended and repaired uniforms for the Gurdon High School band members. No wonder they played so well during their competition.

A workshop has been scheduled November 15 at 9:00 a.m. to sew and stuff 35 neck pillows for the DeGray Kidney Dialysis Center. These pillows will help the patients be more comfortable during their long hours stay at the center.

A basket filled with items will be a donation fund-raiser for the club's community projects. A reminder was given to bring canned products to the November 11 meeting for the Thanksgiving food basket.

The meeting adjourned with Georgia Schee blessing the food. Hostesses were Pauline and Maggie Curry. A workshop on constructing place mats was held in the afternoon.
