Getting Facts Straight . . .

We were looking into the budgets for the Prescott-Nevada County Economic Development Office (EDO) and the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce as financed by the city of Prescott and Nevada County. The EDO is funded by $30,000 from the city and $25,000 from the county each year. Funding for the Chamber is non existent except for membership dues. These funds go entirely to the running of that office and not for salaries alone. Statements that the EDO director earns $65,000 a year or more is false. These funds (in addition to private donations) go to utilities, telephone expense, other office expenses and economic recruitment. Salaries of these employees are public records and available by just asking.

Like or Hate?

One of the advantages of living in Malvern as opposed to my hometown of Prescott, was the great selection of radio stations in the area. One of the hottest morning shows in central Arkansas are two guys by the name of 'the Outlaw' Tommy Smith and Big Dave on Magic 105 (KMJX, 105.1 on your FM dial). The snippets of music played are intertwined with daily events. Some events include 'Flash Me Friday' and 'Wife Beater' giveaways at hockey rinks (men's undershirts with the radio station's logo). These guys are number one in their market, simply because they say and do things their listeners would not do or say because they are afraid of public retribution. When we get letters to the editor, most of the time the writer(s) are saying what the majority of the public is thinking but would not put into writing and sign it due to the same fear. Whether you like or hate the letters or columns you read here, many, and possibly the majority, of people are thinking or saying (in private) the same things and would not express themselves publicly.

Letting Them Fall . . .

My father-in-law has told me for several years that it should not be the right of newspapers to express its opinion, but newspapers should express the opinion of its readers. For the most part, I think I agree with him. I don't mind telling someone what I think or believe in either written or verbal form, and then letting the chips fall where they lay. I always respect the other person's opinion though I don't always agree with them. If upon occasion you become offended with what someone writes in a letter or a column, feel free to express your opinion in your own, signed letter.

Did You Know?

Prescott and Nevada County collection figures on sales taxes have come in for September. Records show Prescott collected $63,641 from its municipal three-cent sales tax burden on residents. Nevada County collected $21,783 during the month with each incorporated town getting its pro-rated share. That adds up to over $85,000 in sales tax money collected for the month throughout the county.
