NHS Lady Jays Open Season With Three VictoriesBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, November 3, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune Basketball season has arrived and the Nevada senior girls are off to an excellent start. In their first three games, the Lady Blue Jays have dispatched all opposition. Game one was against Benton-Harmony Grove on the road, with the Lady Jays posting a 60-51 win. The Nevada squad jumped out to a 14-13 lead at the end of one, and was up 26-21 at the break. In the second half, the Lady Jays saw Benton fight back, taking the third quarter 20-16 to cut the lead to 42-41. However, the final eight minutes saw Nevada's crew buckle down and get serious to do away with their foes. Erica Loudermill led the way for the Lady Jays with 20 points, while Jenifer Harding contributed 16 to the cause. Alexis Madison dropped in a baker's dozen as well. M. Thompson was the leading scorer for Benton-Harmony Grove with 16. Both squads were 50 percent from the charity stripe with Benton-Harmony Grove hitting five of 10, while the Lady Jays converted 10 of 20 at the line. LADY JAYS 44 WALKER 40 Walker was Nevada's second victim of the season, though the Magnolia-based team proved to be tougher to dispatch than Benton-Harmony Grove. Still, the Lady Jays clipped the Lady Hornets's wings 44-40 to go 2-0 on the young season. Walker got on Nevada early, taking a 12-8 lead at the end of the first eight minutes of play. However, the Lady Jays fought back to tie the game at 21-21 when the halftime buzzer sounded. A strong third quarter, in which Nevada outscored Walker 13-7, proved to be the difference in the game. Period four began with the Lady Jays up 34-28. While the Lady Hornets won the final period 12-10, it was a case of too little, too late. Loudermill again paved the way for the Nevada win with 15 points. Nevada's balanced attack saw Harding stroke the nylons for 13 in the contest. Walker's LaToya Manning, though, was the game's leading scorer with 20. Free throws played their part in the contest as Nevada hit five of 10, while Walker was two of 14. LADY JAYS 43 EMERSON 37 Emerson's Lady Pirates were the third team Nevada plundered, as they posted a 43-37 win to go 3-0 on the year. Defense was the rule early on as the first quarter ended with the Lady Jays holding onto a slim 7-6 lead. Nevada's offense warmed up in the second frame, while the Lady Jay defense kept Emerson's offense at bay. By halftime the Lady Jays led 20-12. The Lady 'Bucs got in gear offensively in the third stanza, posting a 16-14 margin, but still trailed Nevada 34-26. Harding led the way for the Lady Jays in this outing with 15 points. T. Robinson was Emerson's leading scorer with 18. The two squads spent plenty of time at the line, with Nevada netting 13 of 29, while Emerson converted 11 of 26. JUNIOR LADY JAYS 46 WALKER 27 Nevada's junior girls also got their season off on the right track by whipping Walker 46- 27 in their opener. The junior Lady Hornets were able to hang with Nevada for one quarter, but found themselves on the short end of a 14-12 score. Neither offense did much in the second six minutes, but Nevada did manage to add a point to its lead as the score was 23-20 at intermission. The junior Lady Jays put the game on ice in the second half as they outscored their counterparts 12-7 in the third and blanked them in the final six minutes for the victory. Stephanie Williams had the hot hand for Nevada as she played string music to the tune of 13 points. Regina Leaks wasn't far behind with her 10 points in the game. Walker's Glasgow was the only offense the team had as she led all scorers with 17. Neither team did particularly well at the charity stripe as Nevada hit three of seven, while Walker was five of 16.
