Aliens Arrested at Plant

Published Wednesday, September 20, 1995 in the Gurdon Times

About 13 illegal aliens were arrested at the Petit Jean Poultry Plant in a raid by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) Sept. 11.

According to Tony Pappaso, special agent with the INS, the raid occurred in the late afternoon, and was based on tips from informed sources. Those arrested were sent to Port Isabell, Texas, where they will be processed and shipped back to Mexico.

Pappaso said there had been several complaints about illegals working at the plant before the raid occurred.

He said if the company's paperwork is in order there will be no problem. However, if it isn't and the INS can prove Petit Jean Poultry knowingly hired illegal immigrants the company can be fined civilly. The fine will depend on the type of violation, he said. Petit Jean can be fined from $100 to $1,000 per violation if the company is found to have knowingly hired illegals, if the I-9 paperwork is not done.

Pappaso said criminal fines could range between $250 and $2,000 per violation, and a possible jail sentence of six months.
