Cabe Grant Aids Youth ProgramPublished Wednesday, June 23, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesThe Horace C. Cabe Foundation and the C. Louis and Mary C. Cabe Foundation have donated grants to the prosecuting attorney's office for the Ninth Judicial District East (Clark County) which will be used by Prosecutor Henry Morgan for juvenile court programs in the county. The prosecuting attorney's office has been active in establishing new juvenile programs designed to provide the appropriate punishment and rehabilitation options for the juvenile offenders. The Cabe grant funds will be used in the next 12 months, along with other resources, to ensure that the juvenile programs already in place will continue. Over the past few years, an intensive supervision and tracking program was instituted which is designed to closely monitor the activities of juveniles who are placed on probation and curfews to ensure compliance with court orders. An electronic monitoring program has been implemented which can be used to place a juvenile under "house arrest." A juvenile community service program allows the juvenile court to impose public service hours to be completed by the juvenile offenders as punishment for violations of the law. The juvenile offenders generally have to work each Saturday until they have completed their court ordered community service. These programs operate under the direction of the Clark County Sheriff Troy Tucker. The Cabe grant funds will be used primarily to provide additional personnel and programs for juvenile court. Former Circuit/Chancery Judge Robert McCallum has accepted an appointment as a deputy prosecuting attorney in Clark County to handle the prosecuting responsibilities for juvenile court. Under his direction, grant funds will also be used to spearhead an effort to create a summer jobs program for at-risk youth in Clark County. A non-profit corporation, Unite For Youth Corporation, has been created through the prosecuting attorney's office to work with mentoring groups in Arkadelphia (Men United) and Gurdon (Delton Simpson), which are already working with at-risk youth. The grant funds will allow for additional resources to provide adult supervision, insurance, equipment and the other resources necessary to implement an effective summer jobs program. United For Youth Corporation is located at 1728 Pine Street in Arkadelphia. For further information, call 870-245-0018. Crew supervisor Jasper Benton or office manager Amber Perry will be glad to help you supervising and finding summer jobs for these teenagers. Doug Nelson serves as the president of United For Youth. He and the other members of the board of directors, Albert Neal, Lawrence Phillips, S.T. Leeper, Jasper Benton, Llewellyn Terry Sr. and Simpson, invite you to give this organization the opportunity to work if you have any yard work, maintenance, cleaning or farm work that needs to be done. Teenagers in this program are ages 14 through 18. They will be closely supervised and fully insured at no cost to the customer. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
