Here is How Gurdon's Opponents Did Friday

Published Wednesday, October 4, 1995 in the Gurdon Times

The Gurdon Go-Devils suffered their first loss Friday night, but not until every ounce of effort from each Devil was exhausted. They put up a strong fight and have nothing to be ashamed of. Stamps should be complimented on its offense, one of the fastest in this area.

The 27-26 loss should not be discouraging to the Go-Devils. While the team was, no doubt, let down they must plan their next victory. Preparation must be made and the last game forgotten.

Junction City by no means is the caliber that Gurdon is, but the local team must not go to JC whipped before the game begins. Often, after being up for a strong team such as Stamps, the players are so deflated they can't be up for the next game. Let's hope that isn't the case this week.

Even though Gurdon was defeated it probably was one of the best games in the state, and there is no reason why it shouldn't have been featured by one of the TV stations.

One more thing: Nashville has now suffered two losses yet the Scrappers are still ranked 10th in the state in Class AA. Where's Gurdon? Somewhere the big paper can't find, apparently. The Go-Devils, even when they were undefeated, were not ranked, but Stamps was.

Now Stamps (5-0) is third in the state, and they deserve it after their win over Gurdon. Prescott is now ranked eighth with a 4-0-1 record.

Gurdon ran over Fouke, 34-9, on September 1. Friday De Queen beat Fouke, 15-6. Mineral Springs is now 2-2; Central Arkansas Christian is tied for first place in the 5A South Conference with a 2-3 overall record and 2-0 in the conference; and Fordyce is 1-1 in the conference and 2-3 overall.

Here is how Gurdon's opponents for the next five games did last week:

  • Junction City, where Gurdon will be this week, lost, 48-0, to Fordyce;
  • Horatio, an away game for the Devils October 13, stomped Dierks, 52-6;
  • Nashville, host to Gurdon on October 20, was defeated, 28-13, by Prescott;
  • Gurdon's homecoming foe on October 27 will be Prescott; and
  • De Queen will host the Devils November 3 for thier last regularly scheduled game.
It should be remembered that Gurdon still has a very good opportunity to win the conference race. If they keep playing as they have the Devils will be in the state playoffs, even if they aren't on top after they play De Queen.

For one thing the conference race has just begun. This week Prescott will have to travel to De Queen, and anything can happen there. For another Stamps still has to play Prescott and Nashville and Fordyce. So, a lot can happen.

Just look for the Go-Devils in the playoffs and go out to support them every week.
