Here is How Prescott's Foes Did Friday Night on the Football Field

Published Wednesday, October 11, 1995 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Prescott Curley Wolves have won a berth to the state playoffs with a win over the De Queen Leopards. The conference win was their third, which is what was needed to win the berth.

Prescott is the first 7AA Conference team to make it. Four teams from the conference will be able to go. It takes at least three wins to do so. The Wolves are 3-0 in the conference and 5-0-1 overall.

Right behind the Curley Wolves are the Stamps Yellowjackets with a 2-0 conference record. The Yellowjackets, idle last week, are 5-0 overall. Prescott and Stamps are the only two teams undefeated in the conference.

The Wolves will host Stamps this Friday, thus an absolute leader of the conference will emerge. Both teams have a fast offense, we are told. The defense, then, could be the deciding factor.

Prescott has proved this year it has an offense equal to its defense. It's been many a year the two have jelled at the same time. The two are performing great this year.

Although Prescott is assured of a playoff berth, the Wolves must have other wins to advance to better positions in the berth. They need to be the home team.

Last week while the Wolves were defeating De Queen 40-12, this is how the other conference teams did: Nashville beat Fordyce, 35-7, and Gurdon defeated Junction City, 27-0.

Nashville has one conference loss, a 28-13 pounding by the Curley Wolves. Gurdon also has one conference loss, a 28-26 defeeat by Stamps. Fordyce has lost two conference games.

Gurdon is now 2-1 and 5-1; Nashville is 1-1 and 4-2; Fordyce is 1- 2 and 2-4; De Queen is 0-2 and 4-2; and Junction City is 0-3 and 1-5.

This is the last year for Gurdon and Stamps to play in the 7AA Conference. Next year, due to a decline of students, they will drop down to Class A. However, Prescott will keep Gurdon on its schedule, possibly the first game of the season.

Coming up to Class AA next year and the 7AA Conference will be Fouke Bismarck. We are told that Fountain Lake, already a Class AA School, will also join the 7AA Conference. Presently Fountain Lake plays in the 5AA Conference: Pulaski Academy, Bald Knob, Beebe, England, Lonoke, Vilonia and DeWitt.

Last week Bismarck won a 2-0 forfeit over Glenwood; Fouke defeated Mineral Springs, 21-0, and Fountain Lake beat Lonoke, 38-6. Bismarck is 4-0 and 6-0. They are ranked fourth in the state in Class A. Fouke is 3- 0 and 3-3 and Fountain Lake is 2-1 and 5-1.

In other games of interest to Prescott fans last week: Hot Springs defeated Ashdown, 12-6, Malvern beat Hope, 35-13, Rison beat Harmoney Grove, 27-17, and Sparkman defeated Hampton, 26-7. Hope has won only one game since the Bobcats managed a tie with Prescott on September 8. They are 2-3-1 overall. Harmony Grove is now 2-4 and Ashdown is 1-5. Ashdown's only win was in their conference, so they are ahead of Hope now.

In addition to Stamps coming to Prescott this week, the Gurdon Go- Devils will play at Horatio, Fordyce will be at De Queen, Junction City is at Nashville and Smackover travels to Hampton (next week's homecoming opponent for Prescott).
