Go-Devisions 1 7AA Win Away From Play-Offs

Published Wednesday, October 11, 1995 in the Gurdon Times

The Gurdon Go-Devils are pushing toward the state playoffs after a 27-0 victory over the Junction City Dragons Friday night.

It takes three wins in the 7AA Conference to assure the Go-Devils of a berth in the playoffs. Presently, they have two. The Devils have only one loss in six games. In the conference they are 2-1 with the loss coming from the Stamps Yellowjackets, who only have two conference wins as well.

The only team thus far assured of being in the playoffs is Prescott with a 3-0 record. This perfect record, however, could change Friday night as the Yellowjackets visit Wolfland. Either Stamps will have three wins under its belt or Prescott will putting icing on the cake -- heading toward having the home crowd in the playoffs.

Gurdon's win Friday night was expected. Junction City has yet to win a conference game.

The Dragons, as Gurdon, will be moving down from the 7AA Conference next year and going into Class A due to a decline of students. More than likely last Friday's game will be the last between the two schools in regular season play, as they probably be different conferences next year.

Looking at this year, though, the Go-Devils must continue to play smart, but tough, ball. Three more conference games remain, and every one of them will be looking to keep the Gurdon team from the playoffs.

Next week the Go-Devils will travel to Horatio to play the Lions. The Lions, a member of the 7A West Conference, where Gurdon will be next year, are 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Last week they were defeated by Lewisville, 36-34.

Here is how other teams in the conference are doing:

  • Fouke is 3-0 and 3-3 (with one of the losses coming from Gurdon); Murfreesboro is 3- 0 and 3-2; Foreman is 2-1 and 2-4; Lewisville is 2-2 and 3-3; Mineral Springs is 1-2 and 2-3 (Gurdon supplied one of those losses); and Dierks is 0-5 and 1-5.
  • Nashville, Gurdon's conference foe on October 20, defeated Fordyce last week, 35-7. The Scrappers now are 1-1 in the conference and 4-2 overall.
  • Prescott, Gurdon's homecoming opponent on October 27, stomped the De Queen Leopards, 40-12. The Curley Wolves' overall record is 5-0-1, with the tie coming from the Hope Bobcats.
  • De Queen, where Gurdon will visit on November 3, is 0-2 in the conference and 4-2 overall.
  • Stamps was idle last week.
In other games of interest to the Gurdon fans, Fouke skunked Mineral Springs, 21-0, and Mayflower just as easy took out Central Arkansas Christian, 34-0.

Show your support for the Go-Devils by making the trip to Horatio Friday night.
