Prescott Council OK's CDL Policy

Published Wednesday, October 18, 1995 in the Nevada County Picayune

Prescott's City Council handled several ordiances and appropiations completing its work during the regular monthly meeting Monday night.

An ordinance implimenting a drug test for all city employees who have a commercial driver's license (CDL) was approved.

A ordinance has to be approved by all state governments by the first of the year for the tests as mandated by the state government. The drug tests will be administered by the state and eventually all employees will be tested.

The Nevada County Quorum Court addressed a similar ordinance at its meeting last week for all county employees who operate vehicles over 16,000 pounds.

An appropiation for $2,900 was made to the Nevada County Soil and Conservation office. State and federal agencies are in the process of closing some county offices.

While the funding has been cut for the local office, the board cannot be terminated by the state and some local funding is required.

The county has been budgeting the office money for several years. The local office provides many service to the city and county and has maps of the county plus flood plains and other soil related materials for use by the residents.

The council agreed to pay Arkla $16,000 for property on West Elm in Prescott. The property has several buildings and a chain link fence around it for security.

The city will use the property for its water department in preparing for the work and supplies needed for the rural water project work.

Mayor Howard Taylor failed to lower the price with Arkla in negotiations though the council authorized it at last month's meeting.

Taylor said Arkla felt the property was priced well below its market value.

The council heard a complaint from city resident Spot Daniel over the huge increase in his water and sewer bill at his laundromat on West Walnut.

No action was taken on Daniel's complaints.
