PHS Wins Homecoming Game, 43-0

No team competing in sports likes to get beat. That goes double for homecoming.

Friday night the Curley Wolves made sure their homecoming was not spoiled by nailing the Hampton Bulldogs' hide to the wall, 43-0.

The excitement began on the first play, even with the ball in the hands of the opponent.

Starting on the 19 after the Prescott kickoff, Hampton quarterback Brent Sumler pitched back to halfback Brent Randall. However, the pitch was way behind Randall and went into the end zone. Randall captured it, but Larry Henderson of Prescott him and the ball for a 2-point safety.

The Hampton kickoff went to Rashad Johnson at his 20, with Johnson getting the ball out to the 48 before he was stopped. A holding penalty against the Wolves moved the ball back to the 38, where the first offensive scoring drive was to begin.

Quarterback Barrett Yates missed C.D. Flemons with a pass on the first play. Courtney Bryant gained one on the next play, and then Yates hit Flemons at midfield, but Flemons got 10 yards more for the first down at the Hampton 40.

Yates gained 5 yards on the next play, then connected with Johnson, who gained to the Hampton 25 for the first down.

The handoff went to Bryant, who fumbled but recovered the ball and rushed to the 16. The handoff to Montra Montgomery was also fumbled, but Yates fell on the ball and gained 2 yards and the first down at the 14.

Bryant got the next call and went in for his first of three touchdowns of the night. The point after kick was good by Yates, and with the clock at 8:58 left in the first quarter the score was 9-0.

After the next Prescott kickoff Hampton managed one play, but then fumbled the ball again with Flemons picking up the loose ball at the 15. He ran to the 2 before he was stopped.

On the first play Montgomery went in for the TD with 7:58 left in the quarter. The PAT was good and the score was 16-0.

Hampton had to punt on its next possession, but Prescott did not a score on this series when Yates had a pass that was intercepted.

On the next series the Bulldogs made a first down, thanks to a Prescott penalty, but later they had to punt with the Curley Wolves getting the ball at their own 15.

After moving the ball within scoring distance the Wolves stalled on the Hampton 9 when a Flemons field goal missed the uprights.

But it didn't take long for the Wolves to score. On the first after the Bulldogs took over on the 20, Rashad Johnson recovered a fumble.

Yates pitched to Mongtomery, who gained 9 yards. Then he handed off to Carlos VanHook, who picked up the first down at the Hampton 8-yard line.

A pass attempt to Flemons failed, then Bryant got the call and went in for his second TD. The PAT by Johnson missed and the score remained 22-0 with 5:38 left in the half.

Prescott again got the ball in Hampton territory after the Bulldogs had to punt. The scoring drive began on the 47.

Yates passed to Johnson for a first down at the Hampton 34.

He then connected with Butler for the TD, but a holding penalty called the it back and 10 yards was stepped off against the Wolves.

A pass for Johnson fell incomplete, and on the next play Yates pitched back to Al Johnston who rushed to the Hampton 27. A delay handoff cost Bryant 3 yards. On the next play Yates handed off to Johnston, who gave the ball to Rashad Johnson on a reverse. Johnson completed a pass to Bryant for the TD, which was nullified with another penalty.

From the Hampton 35 Yates hit Johnson with a pass that was good for the touchdown. John Cornelius took a high snap and ran the ball in for 2 points, making the score 30-0 with 1:44 left in the half.

It didn't get better for Hampton in the second half, but Prescott did fail to score on its first possession. They managed to get to the Hampton 16 before a mis-pitch to Bryant was recovered by the Bulldogs.

However, the Wolves got the ball back a few plays later after a Hampton punt.

On the first play Bryant picked up 11 yards and the first down at the Prescott 48.

Montgomery gained 6 yards on the next play, getting the ball to the Hampton 46. Yates then connected with Flemons for a big gainer and a first down at the Hampton 11.

Bryant got the next call and went in for the TD. This time Mike Fountain had the honors of kicking the point after and the score was 37-0 with 2:37 left in the third period.

After the kickoff Hampton managed a first down before they fumbled the ball again. This time Quentin Bonnette fell on it for Prescott.

Al Johnston came in as quarterback for the Wolves and began the drive at the 25. He missed Marlow with a pitch, but Marlow captured it at the 23. Duke managed 4 yards as the quarter ended. Marlow then got the first down at the 38-yard line.

Johnston handed off to VanHook, who gained 5, and then Duke gained 4 more yards. The Wolves got the first down when Hampton was caught offsides before the snap.

Duke then gained 6 more yards. At this point Stan Koger, normally a defensive lineman, came in as fullback and managed 7 yards on his first carry, then he got the first down with a five-yard gainer.

Duke managed to get to the Hampton 17 for another first down on the next play.

Koger then rushed for 4 more yards to the 13, before Johnston pitched to Duke, who got the first down at the one yard line.

After a timeout Koger went in from the one for the TD. The PAT attempt by Fountain missed and the score remained 43-0 with 6:58 left in the game.

The Bulldogs had to punt once more and this time Brent Jordan went in as quarterback for Prescott. Beginning at the Hampton 44, he drove the Wolves down to the one before coach Eddie Jackson decided to give the ball back to Hampton without scoring. He had Jordan to kneel on the ground each time he got the snap from center.

Hampton was ready for the game to end and did the same when they took over.

Courtney Bryant rushed 14 times for 104 yards, keeping his average over 100 yards.

Unofficially he has rushed for 976 yards with two more games left to play. He is averaging 122 yards per game. He should reach 1000 yards this week against Gurdon.

Duke Rushed 44 yards for Prescott. Montgomery and Tracy Stafford finsihed with 39 yards apiece and Yates had 33 yards rushing.

Prescott had 315 yards total rushing for the night. Yates passed 12 times, completing 6 for 147 yards, making a total of 462 offensive yards for the Curley Wolves.

Hampton managed a total of 64 yards rushing and Sumler completed one of 7 passes for a net of 9 yards, making it a total of 73 yards.

The Curley Wolves had 29 first downs to Hampton's 6.

Prescott was penalized 7 times for 75 yards. Hampton had 10 penalties for 70 yards. There were 10 penaltie
