Gurdon Woman Suing Whataburger for Burns

Published Wednesday, October 25, 1995 in the Gurdon Times

A Gurdon woman is suing a Texarkana fast food restaurant after reportedly being injured with hot coffee.

Annie McNeil has filed suit against the Whataburger restaurant and its owner for about $1.48 million.

She claims the coffee spilled on her, causing second- and third-degree burns on her legs and pelvic region, resulting in permanent scarring and sexual discomfort. McNeil alleges in the suit she was burned so severely she needs plastic surgery.

Officials with the restaurant chain have declined comment on the suit.

When contacted at her home, McNeil declined to discuss the suit either.

In 1994, an 81-year-old woman settled a lawsuit against McDonald's in which she had claimed to be burned by extremely hot coffee.

Hot coffee was also the basis of a suit by a California woman against the Seattle-based Starbucks Coffee chain. She claimed she was seriously injured by hot coffee which spilled from a defective and unsafe paper cup.
