Published Wednesday, November 1, 1995 in the Nevada County Picayune

Jim Westmoreland, criminal investigator with the Nevada County Sheriff's Office, recently completed training at the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy in East Camden.

Westmoreland received an academic achievement award as he finished second out of a graduating class of 83. His grade point average was 97.33. He was also 10th in the overall physical training portion and qualified as an expert with his service weapon.

The 10-week, 400-hour course included instruction in standard police tactics, firearms, legal, educational, technical skills and practical exercises. In each course, emphasis is placed on the officers achieving excellence in both academic subjects and firearms training.

An officer must maintain an academic score of at least 70 percent on each exam, and consistently fire at least 80 percent during firearms training to successfully complete all phases of the course.

Westmoreland is the son of Rachel Westmoreland. He and his wife, Judy, are the parents of one daughter, April, 21.
