7AA Championship Returns to Prescott With Friday Win

Published Wednesday, November 1, 1995 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Prescott Curley Wolves have won the 7AA Conference championship, and will play next week in the PHS stadium in the state playoffs. They shut out Gurdon, 16-0, Friday night to spoil the Go-Devils' homecoming and to win the title.

There is still a chance that Nashville may be co-champions. That won't be determined until Friday night and only if Nashville defeats Stamps and if, at the same time, Prescott (bite your tongue) should lose to Fordyce.

Regardless of that outcome, however, the Curley Wolves will have the home field advantage, because they defeated Nashville. The Wolves are 5- 0 in the conference and 8-0-1 overall with the tie coming against the Class AAA Hope Bobcats. Nashville's only conference loss was to Prescott thus far. In addition the Scrappers have lost to Mena.

The third and fourth positions have not been determined yet. There is a chance that a three-way tie for second could develop.

If Stamps (3-2) should win Friday night and if Fordyce (3-2) should win, Nashville, Stamps and Fordyce (all with 3-3 conference records at that point) would be tied for second place. Then the four teams headed for the state playoffs would be Prescott, Nashville and, who knows?

A total of four teams will be going. Prescott and Nashville definitely will be there. And the two remaining teams will be selected from Stamps, Fordyce and Gurdon. We just don't know which team yet.

Now let's forget the Nashville-Stamps game. Let's say that Prescott will defeat Fordyce Friday night (right on) and Gurdon beats De Queen, then there will be a tie for fourth place. But since Gurdon beat Fordyce earlier in the season the Go-Devils would get fourth spot.

Next week Prescott will play the number four seed from the 4AA East Conference. Presently, that conference has Atkins (6-0) in the number one spot; Dover (5-1) at two; Greenbrier (4-2) at three; and Heber Springs (3-3) and Yellville-Summit (3-3) are tied for fourth. Mountain View (2-4) is in fifth place in 4AA East.

This week in that conference Atkins plays Heber Springs, Clinton will be at Dover, Yellville-Summit visits Greenbrier and Mountain View travels to Perryville. As you can see the fourth spot cannot be determined until Friday night.

The 7AA second place team (presently Nashville) will host the 8AA third place winner; the 7AA third spot (Stamps this week) will go to the 3AA North runner-up stadium; and the 7AA fourth spot (Fordyce or Gurdon) goes to 3AA North winner.

Presently, Warren (4-2) is in third spot in 8AA, and Pocahontas and Highland are tied for runner-up position in 3AA North. The winner between Pocahontas and Highland Friday night will be in the runner-up and will host the 7AA third place team -- if first place Nettleton (6-0) defeats fourth place Corning at Nettleton.

From the way the Curley Wolves have been playing Prescott fans should be getting out their extra heavy clothing. It looks like the Wolves could go a long ways in post season play.

The Wolves will have the home field advantage in all playoff games, but the state championship game will be played at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock on Saturday, December 9. Prescott will also be the home team there if the Wolves keep winning.

Anouther reminder to Prescott fans: the home games are AAA (Arkansas Activities Association) sanctioned and your season tickets will not be accepted. You must pay to get in, but it will be worth it.

In addition to some outstanding football games, outstanding half-time performances will be seen. The Prescott band the best it's been in years and years.
