For Saturday Night Shooting, Clubbing and Stabbing

Published Wednesday, November 1, 1995 in the Nevada County Picayune

A fight involving several people resulted in one man being shot and another stabbed and clubbed Saturday night.

According to Nevada County Sheriff Harold Vines, the incident was first called in to his office around 9:35 p.m. Saturday, at East Second, spilling over onto East Third Street.

Vines said the cause of the altercation is still not known, but his deputies are investigating the situation. He said one man was shot in the leg, with the bullet going through the thigh of the right leg, striking the left leg.

This man was taken to Medical Park Hospital in Hope, then transported to St. Michael's Hospital in Texarkana. Once released from St. Michael's, he was arrested for aggravated assault.

A second man was treated for stab wounds in his right hand and a wound in his left leg. Vines said this man's left arm had been broken, apparently by a baseball bat or some other type of club. He was taken to Medical Park and transferred to Wadley Regional Medical Center in Texarkana, where he still is.

Vines said when this suspect is released, he will be returned to Nevada County and be arrested.

According to Vines, there were seven or eight people involved in the fracas. He said they chased one another from Second to Third street. Vines said there is a strong possibility alcohol was involved in the fight.

He said a .22 caliber rifle was confiscated at the scene, though officers did not find a knife, bat or other type of club. Officers from the NCSO, Prescott Police Department and Auxiliary officers responded to the battle, offering their assistance.

The two wounded men will be charged with aggravated assault, one will be charged with disorderly conduct, while a fourth suspect faces charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Formal charges have not been filed as of press time, and the names of those involved were not released by the NCSO. However, all involved appear to have been adults.
