Curley Wolves Advance

Published Wednesday, November 15, 1995 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Prescott Curley Wolves will play Hamburg in the second round of the Class AA state playoffs this Friday night at the PHS football stadium.

The Wolves destroyed the Yellville-Summit Panthers last week, 48-6, in the first round of the playoffs. At the same time Hamburg defeated Rivercrest, 24-18, to advance.

Prescott and Hamburg have met before. In 1983, on the way to the finals at War Memorial Stadium, the Wolves beat the Lions, 19-7, at Hamburg in a contest where Hamburg was supposed to win.

So, just because a team is favored doesn't mean anything. Hamburg is good or the Lions wouldn't be in the playoffs. They came in second in the 8AA District. Dollarway was the number one team from 8AA, so that should tell you something.

If -- no, when -- Prescott wins Friday night they will face the winner of the Gentry and Booneville game. Gentry is the winner of the 1AA Conference. Booneville came in third in the 4AA West Conference.

In other games of interest last week Nashville advanced by beating Warren, 17-7; Gurdon lost to Pocahontas, 26-14, during a storm; and Fordyce lost to Nettleton, 20-19.

Nashville will play at Nettleton this week. The Scrappers are in the lower bracket. The only way that Prescott and Nashville could meet again is for both teams to advance to the finals. It could happen.

Outside Class AA it was Harmony Grove defeating Foreman, 33-6. Prescott had defeated Harmony Grove, 15-0, in the first game of the season. Bismarck, which will be the 7AA Conference next year, was defeated, 21-18, by Harding Academy.
