Junior Girls Split First Two GamesPublished Wednesday, November 22, 1995 in the Gurdon TimesGurdon's junior girls basketball team is playing .500 ball, with a win over Lewisville and a loss to Arkadelphia. The loss came in their Nov. 16 game as the junior Lady Beavers posted a 29-25 win. Free throw shooting proved to be the downfall for Gurdon's junior Lady Devils as they went one of 10 at the stripe. Gurdon's girls found themselves on the short end of a 13-6 score at the end of one, and were down 23-15 at the break. They rallied in the third, keeping the home team from scoring, while adding four more to their tally. Both teams scored six in the final six minutes. Camelia Cooper and Yvonne Penny led Gurdon's attack with six points each. Penny's points came from downtown as she connected on two three-pointers. Lavonda Young added five for the Lady Devils, while Tiffany Ware and Helen Dickens each scored four. The Lady Beavers were led by A. Anthony's 10, including two three-pointers. T. Gulley contributed seven in the win, with a trey thrown in. The Lady Beavers took advantage of their free throw opportunities, sinking four in four tries. However, the Lady Devils opened the season Nov. 7 with a 33-32 win over Lewisville. Lavonda Young paved the way for the win with 17 points. She was aided by Dickens' six and four each from Cooper and Ware. Kashonna Young netted two. Y. Davis and Pree led Lewisville with seven each, while Fleming and Henry both had six. Gurdon's junior girls did better from the free throw line as they hit five of 10. Poor shooting from the stripe cooked the junior Red Devils as they only managed three of 11 attempts. The Lady Devils will prepare for the difficult Blevins Junior Tournament, scheduled for Nov. 27 through Dec. 2. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
