Going Tougher In Playoffs For PrescottPublished Wednesday, November 22, 1995 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe Prescott Curley Wolves have made it to the quarter-finals round of the state playoffs with a 37-13 win over the Hamburg Lions. At this stage there is no powderpuffs. All teams are winners or they would not have made it this far in the playoffs. The same can be said about the Gentry Pioneers. The Pioneers (10-1) are winners of the 1AA Conference in northwest Arkansas. They are no powderpuffs. When they go into a game they go for the throat, the jugular, the kill. In the first game Gentry took out England, 30-0. Last Friday they eliminated Booneville, 21-7. That's 51-7 in two games. Prescott will have its work cut out for them this week in preparation for the Pioneers. But the Wolves are winners, too. They have the smarts and the moves, the ability to do the right thing at the right time. They can make things happen. This contest is a do or die and the Wolves are not ready to be turned away yet. Both, the offense and the defense, are working hard toward the big championship. The defense must continue to be tough and agressive and have solid hitting for advancement in the playoffs. The offense is looking good. The Wolves have a good air attack to complement the ground attack. The Wolves have shown a good balance in the playoffs. A complete team is what it takes to win. While the playoffs are winding down and the the championship game may be on the minds of some, the upcoming game must be played first and Gentry must be prepared for. Concentration must be on Gentry. And forget the polls. Prescott has moved up to fourth in the state in Class AA, but that doesn't prove anything. The poll has Dollarway at first place, Pulaski Academy second, Clarksville third, then Prescott, Nashville, Atkins, Brinkley, Gentry, Nettleton and Beebe. Clarksville defeated Huntsville, 26-14, Friday to advance and Brinkley defeated Pocahontas, 13-8, to advance. If -- no, when -- Prescott wins Friday night they will face either Clarksville or Brinkley next week in the semi-finals. Nashville, playing in another bracket, also advanced last week by defeating Nettleton, 21-14. They will host Atkins this week in the quarter-finals. Of the eight teams in the quarter-finals this Friday seven of them are winners of their respective conferences. The exception is Nashville, which defeated Nettleton, the winner of the 3AA West Conference. Of course Nashville came in second, behind Prescott, in the 7AA Conference. No losers here, just good, solid teams -- all winners. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
