Wolverettes Miss Win At Gurdon By 1 Goal

Published Wednesday, November 29, 1995 in the Nevada County Picayune

Anything different and the Wolverettes would have handed the Lady Go Devils their first loss of the season Tuesday, Nov. 21.

What happened, though, is Prescott's senior girls fell 48-47 and dropped to 3-2 on the year.

The Wolverettes appeared to have taken control of the game early as they scored the first 10 points of the contest before Gurdon got its first basket.

However, the Lady Devils battled back and entered the second period with the score 13-13.

Not to be denied, the Wolverettes fought hard and held a 23-20 lead at the half of what amounted to a war zone under the basket.

Prescott extended its lead to 36-29 by the end of the third period, and appeared to be headed for the win.

Unfortunately, that's when the bottom fell out. Prescott Coach Cecily Butler said her girls began making mental mistakes and bad passes.

This was all Gurdon's girls needed as they rallied in the final eight minutes for the slender victory.

Ashley Stewart led Prescott with 16 points, and pulled down 16 rebounds as well. Laura Culpepper followed with 12 points. Gladys Gulley ripped down nine boards.

In addition, Prescott shot extremely well from the free throw line, making nine of 12 shots.

Gurdon was led by Tabitha Thomas' 21. Rasheda Dickens poured in 13 as well.

The Lady Devils were not as accurate from the stripe as they only managed nine of 21 attempts.

Gurdon's senior girls are now preparing for a tough tournament at Southern Arkansas University, where they opened with a win over Fouke Monday.

Complete results of the Lady Devils escapades on the tourney court will be presented at a later date.
